POSITION PAPER
Position Paper
-This is an essay which aims to present
an arguable opinion about a certain
issue.
-Goal : to convince the audience of
your opinion that is valid and
defensive.
◦An author who write is a position
paper is making an argument which
has to be built upon evidence.
◦The structure used to do this is very
similar to that used when writing a
critical essay.
Why do we write Position Paper ?
-To help readers understand someone’s
view about a certain issue
-To convince the audience that your
opinion is valid and defensible.
- To generate support on an issue
through and world assertions.

Issue
- also called a “ controversy” a
topic will be an issue if people have
a different views about it.
ISSUE/S: may be effectively used for a
position paper.

Thesis
◦- this is statement that summarizes your topic
and declares your position on it.

◦-also called as your CLAIM
◦( shows specifically evidence )

◦Informative Thesis
-used if you want to declare your
intentions in this essay and guide the
reader to the conclusion that you
teach.
Persuasive Thesis
- thesis statements that take a
positions and argue it. Answer your
“ Why your opinion are true.”
Support
◦Evidences or ideas to substantiate
the reasons.
Types of Support
◦ 1. Facts
-figures and the writers own observations or reports
from scholarly studies.
2. Comparison
- similarities or differentiations between two ideas
concepts or situations.
3. Opinions
- the authors feelings or generalizations.
Counterargument
◦- it is an argument opposed to your thesis
or part of your thesis.
◦- it expresses the view of a person who
disagree with your position.
◦When you counter-argue , you consider a possible
argument “against” your thesis or some aspect of
your reasoning.
◦This is a good way to test your ideas when
drafting , while you still have a time to revise
time .
◦And finished essay, it can be persuasive ,( in both
sense of the word ), disarming tactic.
How to write an effective Position
Paper.
◦ 1. Decide on a topic.
◦ 2. Write your position idea.
◦ 3. Gather your sources.
◦ 4. Decide what sort of claims you are writing.
◦ 5. Write your paper.
◦ 6. Do a peer editing or Peer Evaluating
◦ 7. Rewrite a draft.
