MINERAL COMPOSITION OF PAWPAW
SEED

INTRODUCTION
Pawpaw is a spermatophyte (seed plant). Papaya seed is one of the seeds
considered waste by individuals who consume the flesh. Papaya seed are small,
blackish when matured and whitish when not matured. The seed is enclosed in a
sac of liquid.

Minerals are substances that are naturally present in the earth’s crust and are
not formed by animals and plants. Minerals occur in food both in organic and
inorganic compounds. The major organic compounds includes carbohydrates,
phosphates, chlorides and sulphates of sodium, calcium, potassium and
magnesium.

Phytochemicals are chemical substances that occur naturally in food. Most

phytochemicals are beneficial to health while some others are not and are
considered food toxicants. Phytochemicals like alkaloids, tannins, saponins and
flavonoids are of medical importance and are commonly used in herbal medicine.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of this work was to estimate the
phytochmical and mineral composition of
paw paw seed sold in commercial markets.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
This work was done to;
Estimate the phytochemical present in
paw paw seed.
Estimate the mineral composition of paw
paw seed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Sample Collection
Pawpaw seeds were purchased from Afor-Oba Market,
Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State,
Nigeria.
Sample Preparation
Dried pawpaw seeds before purchased were visually
inspected. Defective tubers were manually removed and
discarded. Only healthy seeds were selected. The seeds
were weighed out in portions washed thoroughly in two
changes of clean water and drained prior to use for the
studies. Mineral composition was determined by the
methods described by Rutkowsi et al and Adrian, 1973,
respectively.
RESULTS
Table 1: Results of Phytochemical Analysis of Pawpaw
seeds

PARAMETERS RESULT
Phytate 23.10%

Saponin 8.90%

Flavonoid 86.60%

Alkaloid 56.60%

Tannin 10.10%
Table 4.2: Results of Mineral Composition of Pawpaw
Seeds

PARAMETERS TEST/100G RESULT

Cu (ppm) 1.655

Co (ppm) 0.216

Cr (ppm) 0.00

Mg (ppm) 1.250

Fe (ppm) 0.456

Zn (ppm) 1.594

Mn (ppm) 0.502
DISCUSSION
The outcome of the phytochemical and mineral content of pawpaw
seeds has been established. Mineral composition was determined by
the methods described by Rutkowsi et al and Adrian, 1973, respectively.

The result shows the phytochemical results obtained from the

screening of pawpaw seed samples. The result recorded that Tannin
recorded 10.10%, Saponin 8.90%, Phytate 23.10mg/g, Flavoniod
86.60%, and Alkaloid 56.60%. The outcome of the mineral analysis
showed the highest value on Copper (Cu) (1.655), magnesium (Mg) with
(1.250), Zinc (Zn) (1.594) with Chromium (Cr) (0.000) having the lowest
value on the proximate analysis rang.

 The results of this present study have shown that pawpaw seed has
quality phytocmeicals and minerals which are beneficial to health and
food industry. Therefore there is need to utilize this phytochemicals and
minerals in our daily food and drug supplements.
CONCLUSION
Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has been
associated with a reduced risk of many life-style related
health conditions. Many studies have suggested that
increasing consumption of plant foods like papaya
decrease the risk of "Obesity" and overall moderate
diabetes, heart disease and promote a healthy
complexion and hair, increased energy, over lower wags
age- related muscular degeneration:
The anti- Oxidant caxanthin. found in papaya filters out
harmful blue light rays and plays protective role in
health. The risks for developing asthma are lower in
people who consume a high amount of certain nutrient.
