FORMS AND STYLES

OF ART
STYLE
•The arrangement of a variety of objects
into a group of categories that make
them easier to recognize, understand
and talk about. Makes further analysis
and study possible.
FOUR BROAD CATEGORIES OF STYLE
I. THE STYLE OF OBJECTIVE ACCURACY
This is Art that attempts to accurately represent
what we see in the world around us.
1. Realism
2. Photorealism
3. Stylization
REALISM
sometimes called naturalism, in the arts is generally
the attempt to represent subject matter truthfully,
without artificiality and avoiding artistic conventions,
or implausible, exotic, and supernatural elements.
 has been prevalent in the arts at many periods, and
can be in large part a matter of technique and
training, and the avoidance of stylization
2. PHOTOREALISM
is a genre of art that
encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic
media, in which an artist studies a photograph and then
attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as
possible in another medium.
 can be used broadly to describe artworks in many
different media, it is also used to refer specifically to a
group of paintings and painters of the American art
movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
3. STYLIZATION
 in art, the decorative generalization of figures and objects by means
of various conventional techniques, including the
simplification of line, form, and relationships of space and color.
 is a natural method of rhythmic organization in
decorative art, where the subordination of each pictorial element to
the overall composition is particularly important.
II. THE STYLE OF FORMAL ORDER
The expression of a preference for stability in art,
and by implication in the world.
expresses an artist's preference for stability in
their creative work . This general style creates
works with the characteristics of order in measure,
proportion, mathematical relationships, balance
and harmony.
1. IDEALIZATION -

 a mental mechanism in which the person attributes

exaggeratedly positive qualities to the self or others.

- the action of regarding or representing something

as perfect or better than in reality.
1. IDEALIZATION -
refers to the method of portraying
people, places, or things in a
romanticized, and unrealistically perfect
form.
2. INTELLECTUAL ORDER –

The Style of Art from Kinetic art- sculpture that

moves with wind or powered by machine or elect.
3. BIOMORPHIC ORDER -
Biomorphic comes from combining the
Greek words ‘bios’, meaning life, and
‘morphe’, meaning form.
The term seems to have come into use
around the 1930s to describe the imagery in
the more abstract types of
surrealist painting and sculpture
4. Aesthetic Order -
• Aestheticis a set of principles underlying and
guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic
movement.

• challenges contemporary theories of aesthetics,

offering the idea of beauty as quantitative yet
different from the traditional discursive order.
III.THE STYLE OF EMOTION

ROMANTICISM
Is a movement in the arts and literature that originated
in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration,
subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual.
the state or quality of being romantic.
IV. THE STYLE OF FANTASY
Fantasy can be based on a lot of different things:

1. Utopian ideals
2. Myth
3. Dreams and Hallucinations
4. Scientific Fantasy
1. UTOPIAN IDEALS

 A utopia is an imagined community or society that

possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for
its citizens.
 an introduction. In 1516 Thomas More invented Utopia,
a distant island where people lived in social, political and
personal harmony. ... Either way, utopia has come to be
used to describe almost every fantastical future and
model society over the past 500 years.
2. MYTH

A myth quite simply is a story which serves

a purpose: to explain the origins of
something to justify something, or to serve
as a warning or an example or a symbol.
3. DREAMS AND HALLUCINATIONS

Hallucinations often seem to have the creativity of

imagination, dreams, or fantasy — or the vivid detail and
externality of perception. ...
“An hallucination is a strictly sensational form of
consciousness, as good and true a sensation as if there
were a real object there. The object happens to be not
there, that is all.”
4. SCIENTIFIC FANTASY

Fantasy art is a genre of art that depicts magical or other

supernatural themes, ideas, creatures or settings. ...
Indeed fantasy art pieces are often intended to represent specific
characters or scenes from works of fantasy literature. Such works
created by amateur artists may be called FANART.
Fantastic art is a broad and loosely defined art genre. It is not
restricted to a specific school of ... The rise
of fantasy and science fiction "pulp" magazines
demanded artwork to illustrate stories and (via cover art) to
promote sales.
What are the different art forms?

VISUAL ART
 is a form of art that uses any medium to signify
the artist's idea, sentiment and imagination.
Examples of visual arts: Paintings, Drawings,
Sculptures, Photography.
APPLIED ART
 is a portion of visual art and it can be defined as art that
has real-world application as well as functionality.
Examples of applied art: Architecture, Fashion Design,
Wood Crafts, Interior Design.
PERFORMING ARTS
 is that form of art which includes dance, music,
opera, films, theater, drama, magic shows and
stand up comedies. It is the most celebrated and
appreciated form of art.
5 REASONS TO STUDY ARTISTIC STYLES:
1. To acquire useful categories for thinking about the
common traits of artworks, produced at various
times and places.
2. To understand the artists, periods, countries,
cultures and regions in whose art a particular style
frequently appears.
3. To compare and/or judge works of art that seem
related by a look, or feeling, or subject matter.
4. To understand the connections between an
artist’s creative approach and our reactions to
their work.
5. To get special information, the inside scoop
about social changes.

The Digital Art Malliarium, a collaborative work based
on Juan Luna’s Spoliarium.

The Contemporary Arts

Malliarium was a collaborative digital work by Steve Santos,
Ross Capili, Jose Tence Ruiz, Archie Degamo, George Cabig,
Heber Bartolome, Nelson Viterbo, and Art Suarez.
The artists used Mac G4 and Pentium 3 Computers (newest series year 2000).
The artistic interpretation was in the context of the mall culture of our time.

The Contemporary Arts

Traditional artists perfected their art by
practicing “mimesis” or copying the mode
exactly as it is.
Contemporary artists did not feel oblige to apply
perspective, color combination, naturalism and other
guidelines that were carefully observed in traditional
art.
They broke the rules of traditional art.

Romeo Tabuena – his painting, the heavy black

carabao is shown standing on thin legs that
disappear in a flat background.

Hernando Ocampo – used geometric forms

in strong red colors overlapping with shades
of yellow to brown.

Characteristics of Contemporary Art

Contemporary arts can be found in the museums,

galleries, art schools, side streets, and public spaces
like the train or bus stations, shopping centers or
parks.

The practice of selling paintings has also

changed in contemporary arts due to
online selling.
The Contemporary Arts
Nicolas Aca – Performance artist from Cagayan de
Oro.
Mona Alcudia – An artist from Cebu that uses paper
to produce solid forms (Paper Bowl Tableware)
Pueblo por la Playa’s office – an igloo shaped
architecture that can be found in Quezon Province.

The Contemporary Arts

Contemporary artist also employ the help of
fabricators, carpenters, electricians, or welder in
“constructing” their art work.
Originality is not an issue in contemporary art. An
artist can get another artist’s work and add to it,
redesign or interpret it using other materials.
Ex. The portrait of Marilyn Monroe was created from diff. materials
used.

The Contemporary Arts

Andy Warhol – make an art work where a series of faces of
Monroe appears in a variety of colors.

Giovanni Abing – an
artist from Bohol
used colourful papers to make a collage
portrait of Monroe.

The Contemporary Arts

In Paete Laguna, numerous sculptures are made of
famous Monroe in her white dress being blown by
the wind. The same figure is mass produced using
fiberglass and resin.

The Contemporary Arts

What is essential to contemporary artists
therefore, is the process of art-making. It is the
experience of dipping one’s hands into a pail of
paint and making markings on a flat surface
that matters to the contemporary artist.
Contemporary Art – Is a statement that an artist
makes about life, thoughts, ideas, and many other
things that define human life.
