LESSON 3 - How Computer Works

The document discusses how computers process data through a cycle of input, processing, output, and storage. Data comes in many forms like text, numbers, pictures, audio, and video. When collected and processed by a computer, data becomes meaningful information. An example given is how a student ID card contains various input data that is then processed and printed out. The central processing unit transforms input data and the results are output on a monitor or printer with storage allowing saved information for future use.

Work

What is Data?

Data comes in different forms. It can be a

text, a number, a picture, an audio file, or a
video file. When all these data are
gathered and processed, they become
information.

Look at your school identification card (ID). It contains
several data such as your name, picture, grade level,
section, address, contact number, and more. These data
were collected, entered on the computer, laid out, and
printed to produce an ID card. This is an example of how
data are processed on a computer to make them important
information.

The Data Processing Cycle – How Does it
Work?
Data undergoes a process to create meaningful
information. Computers help in processing data
faster. This way, people get the information
quickly. It goes through stages or a process
known as the data processing cycle.

1. Input – This stage is where you enter all
the data you collected inside the computer
using input devices such as keyboard and
mouse.

8
8
2. Processing– This stage is where the computer
transforms the data you have entered to produce
meaningful orientation. Inside the system unit is
the Central Processing Unit (CPU) which serves
as the brain of the computer that processes data.

9
9
3. Output– This stage is where the results
of the processed data will be shown on the
monitor and/or can be printed using a
printer.

4. Storage – This stage is where you keep
the data and information, which you might
need in the future. There are several
computing storage devices that you can use
like a USB flash drive, hard disk, and
memory card.
