LESSON 2 - The Different Types of Computers

The document discusses different types of computers categorized by their power and size. Supercomputers are the most powerful for tasks like weather forecasting and science research. Mainframe computers, though larger than normal PCs, are used by governments and banks to store large amounts of data. Minicomputers have high processing power but are smaller than mainframes. Microcomputers include desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches in varying sizes. Microcomputers also vary by their operating systems, including Windows, Android, and Apple systems.

The Different Types

of Computers
Supercomputers
Supercomputers
These are the most
powerful computers. The
word ‘super’ here means
fastest in computations,
ahs a very large storage
capacity, very expensive,
as well as very fast in input
and output capabilities.
It is used for a country’s security, weather
forecasting, science research, and other
complicated tasks.

Mainframe
Computers
These computers are used by
government organizations and
big companies like banks. They
use mainframe computers to
store large amounts of data that
would not fit a normal-sized
computers.
Mainframe
You Computers
have probably seen your parents withdraw
money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
instead of going to the bank. ATMs are smaller
computers connected to a bigger mainframe
computer. It processes the transactions
immediately and sends the information back to the
ATMs even from remote locations.
Minicomputer
s
Minicomputers
These types of computers have
high processing powers and
capacities but are smaller size and
less powerful compared to a
mainframe computer. A
minicomputer is about as large as
a washing machine or freezer.
Some companies would prefer to
buy a minicomputer because it is
less expensive and will not occupy
too much space.
Microcompute
rs
Microcomputers
These are electronic devices
with a microprocessor as its
Central Processing Unit (CPU).
These are portable computers
that are easy to handle. These
computers come in different
shapes, sizes, and brands.

Size and Capacity
Desktop
Computers
Desktop Computers
It is a computer that is
designed to be placed on top
of a table or desk. It usually
consists of four basic parts –
mouse, keyboard, system unit,
and monitor – that are
connected using cables and
wires.
Laptop or
Notebook
Laptop or
Notebook
It is a portable computer that is
used by people who frequently
travel and need to be a able to
work anywhere, even while on
the road. It has a flip-up screen
and functions with a battery.
Netbook
Netbook
It is smaller and has less
processing power than the
notebook computer. It is fit for
web browsing, taking notes, and
doing simple word-processing
tasks.
Tablet
Computer
Tablet
Computer
It is a wireless and flat-screen
computer. You can take notes
using this device with the help
of a stylus or digital pen on a
touch screen. It can also be
used for playing games,
watching movies, and listening
to music.
Smartphone
It is more than a mobile
phone as it can perform a
number of tasks of a
computer. This is usually has
an operating system that can
download applications and
browse the Internet.
Smartwatch
This gadget is a wearable
computing device that closely
resembles a wristwatch. The
wearer of the device can use it to
read text messages or e-mails,
answer phone calls from a mobile
phone, and listen to music short-
range wireless connection.

Computers
1. Windows Operating System (OS)
Compatible Computers
These are computers that run
using the Windows operating
system (OS). The Windows OS
was created by the Microsoft
Corporation that was founded by
Bill Gates. You will learn more
about the Windows operating
system in your next lessons.

2. Android Computers

It is a mobile phone that can

perform a number of tasks similar
to a computer. It usually has a
touch screen, Internet access, and
an operating system that can
download applications or programs.
These are computers that run
using a program or operating
system made by Apple Inc.
(macOS). Macintosh computers
are known to be the first
personal computers to use
computer graphics on computer
screens (Graphical User
Interface or GUI) and introduced
the mouse to operate the
computer.
Apple Inc. created a number of amazing devices.
You might have seen them in computer stores or
through television commercials.

Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, invented the

first Macintosh computer with the help of his
friend Steve Wozniak. It was Wozniak who
designed Apple II in 1977.
