Webinar On Managing Project Data For Better Decision Making

This document discusses managing data for quality assurance and better decision making in development sectors. It aims to understand the importance of data, data management, and data-driven decision making. It defines data and information, explaining that data becomes meaningful information when analyzed and interpreted. It also describes the differences between data and information, and discusses data management processes, including data collection, storage, accessibility, analysis, and reporting. The document emphasizes that data-driven decisions require real-time, community-based, and actionable data.

Webinar Objectives

Managing Data for quality assurance and better decision in

Development Sector

 Understanding the importance of data, data management and data

driven decision making
 Designing a better and effective course module
 Receiving feedback from the participants
Why do we need data?

 Data is the most effective weapon for convincing …..

 Data is the most powerful weapon for bargaining ……
 Data is the most transparent way to explain ……..
What is Data?
Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.

the quantities, characters, or symbols on which operations are

performed by a computer, which may be stored and transmitted in the
form of electrical signals and recorded on magnetic, optical, or
mechanical recording media.
What is Data?
Quantitative data is provided in numerical form, like the weight,
volume, or cost of an item.
Some examples of quantitative data include:
• Revenue in dollars
• Weight in kilograms
• Age in months or years
• Length in centimeters
• Distance in kilometers
• Height in feet or inches
• Number of weeks in a year
What is Data?
Qualitative data is descriptive, but non-numerical, like the name, sex,
or eye color of a person.
Some examples of quantitative data include:
• Diary
• Documents
• Discussion
• Case studies
• Photographs
• Transcriptions
What is Data?
What Is Information?
Information is defined as knowledge gained through study,
communication, research, or instruction.
Essentially, information is the result of analyzing and interpreting pieces
of data.
Whereas data is the individual figures, numbers, or graphs, information
is the perception of those pieces of knowledge.
For example, a set of data could include temperature readings in a
location over several years.
Without any additional context, those temperatures have no meaning.
Only when the data is organized and compiled in a useful way can it
provide information that is beneficial to others.
Data Vs. Information
The Key Differences between Data vs. Information
 Data is a collection of facts, while information puts those facts into context.
 While data is raw and unorganized, information is organized.
 Data, on its own, is meaningless. When it’s analyzed and interpreted, it becomes
meaningful information.
 Data does not depend on information; however, information depends on data.
 Data typically comes in the form of graphs, numbers, figures, or statistics.
Information is typically presented through words, language, thoughts, and ideas.
 Data isn’t sufficient for decision-making, but you can make decisions based on
information.
What is Data Management?
Data management is the practice of collecting, keeping, and using data
securely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
The goal of data management is to help people, organizations, and
connected things optimize the use of data within the bounds of policy
and regulation so that they can make decisions and take actions that
maximize the benefit to the organization.
The primary objective of Data Management is to connect and pipe in
data from different sources and make critical business decisions.
What is Data Management?

Data management includes

- storage,
- data security,
- data sharing,
- data governance,
- data architecture,
- database management, and
- records management.

 What is data driven decision?

 How data can support in timely decision making?

 How timely decision making can impact on result?
