What are Maglev Trains?
 Maglev = Magnetic + Levitation
 The thing that raise or float by means of a magnetic power is simply called
magnetic levitation
 Magnetic Fields
 Alternative means of transport
 Compete with speed of rail & airplanes
Principal:-
 The basis of maglev train mechanisms are magnetic levitation. This is achieved
with the principal of repulsion and attraction between two poles.
 Maglev trains have to perform the following function to operate in high speeds
1] Levitation
2] Propulsion
3] Lateral Guidance
Types of Maglev Train

 1] Electromagnetic Suspension  2] Electrodynamic Suspension

Electro- Magnetic Suspension System

 It is attraction type of system.

 Maglev – guideway geometry is used to attract a direct current electromagnet
towards the track.
 EMS levitates the train about one- third of an inch above the guideway.
 Maglev train in Germany works on EMS.
Electro-Dynamic Suspension System

 It is repulsive type of system.

 Eddy currents are generated by superconducting coil operating in persistent
current mode.
 Eddy currents create a magnetic field and oppose the magnetic field created by
travelling coil by Lenz’s Law.
 Maglev train in Japan works on EDS
Comparison between Two System
ELECTROMAGNETIC SUSPENSION ELECTRDYNAMIC SUSPENSION
(EMS) (EMS)

Simpler to implement Stable at high speeds

Can levitate at zero speed long lifetime

Reduced civilian exposure to magnetic fields Safer even during power outage

Complex feedback loop Cannot levitate at zero speed

Ability be stable at high speed Costly to implement

Conclusion
 Maglev Trains - Eco-friendly, efficient, fast.
 Electromagnetic and Electrodynamic Suspension.
 Electromagnetic in track and in the train help propel the train forward –
opposite attract , like repel.
 Maglev has potential application in aerospace engineering..
