PARALLEL CIRCUIT

PARALLEL CIRCUIT
 A circuit is connected in parallel when
it is has a common voltage in all
components. The amount of voltage
is same in every component of the
circuit. Thus, we have the formula:
VT = V1 = V2 = V3…Figure 3 shows
the actual connection of two resistors
connected in parallel.
CONSTANT VOLTAGE
VA = V1 = V 2
CURRENT IN EACH RESISTANCE
 The resistance is inversely
proportional to the current: higher
resistance results to lower current…
 The current in each resistance is
attained thru the formula:
 I1 = V1 / R1; I2 = V2 / R2; I3
= V3 / R 3
THE TOTAL RESISTANCE
 In a parallel circuit, we attain the total
resistance thru the formula:

How do we solve for the unknown
components of a parallel circuit?
 Analyze the problem.
 Note the unknown components.
 Choose the appropriate formula that matches
the unknown.
 VOLTAGE is always constant during the
process.
 DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE THE FORMULA,
SOLUTION AND FINAL ANSWER WITH
APPROPRIATE UNIT.
Sample Problem:
Two resistors having 33 Ω and 330 Ω are
connected in parallel with a 66 V voltage source.
Determine the total resistance and the amount of
current in each resistor.
Anaysis
R1 and R3 are connected in parallel. The voltage is constant.
The voltage consumed by each resistor is constant or same
and is equal to 66 V. We have the formula: VT = V1 = V3. By
electron flow, current will start from negative polarity and it will
pass thru points A and B. It splits at point B into two different
amount of current. From point B, current 1 or I 1 will move
towards C and pass thru R1 and towards point F. Current 3, I3
from point B will move towards point J and pass thru R 3. I1 and
I3 from points F and I respectively will meet at point G. From
point G, it will pass thru H and return to the positive polarity of
the voltage source. Thus, the equation based on the flow of
current will be formed as: IT = I1 + I3.
Solution
We solve for the individual current that will pass in each resistor using
Ohm’s law, I = V/R thus,
I1 = V1/R1 = 66 V/ 330 Ω
I1 = 0.2 A = 200mA

and for I3,


I3 = V3/R3 = 66 V/ 33 Ω
I3 = 2 A

For the total current in the circuit, we have:

IT = I1 + I3 = 0.2 A + 2 A
IT = 2.2 A
Solution
By the concept, resistance is inversely proportional to current. It shows that
the computation and the concept match. Therefore, the answer is correct.

To solve for the total resistance, apply Ohm’s law, RT = VT/IT:


RT = VT/IT = 66V/2.2 A
RT = 30 Ω

To check the answer, apply the other formula: 1/R1 + 1/R3 = 1/RT
1/RT = 1/33 + 1/330
1/RT = 0.0333…
take the reciprocal value:
RT = 30 Ω
