Grammar Overview

 O or A at the beginning of a word or


before the stress is pronounced as a
weak ‘a’

 In most cases Ч, ч is pronounced as


‘ch’ like in cheese. *Exceptions such as
Чтo (shto?) should be memorized.
Negation

 не = not. Shows
negation.
Это апте́ ка? Нет,
э́ то не апте́ ка.
 Это не Аня. Это дом
 Это не ма́ ма.

The soft sign indicates that the preceding consonant


is soft.

Russian nouns are classified according to


grammatical gender:
 Masculine

 Feminine

 Neuter
Gender of Nouns
 Masculine nouns end in  Feminine nouns end
a consonant, -ь, or –й in -а or –я

май end in -а or -я and
refer to male persons

Russian nouns are classified according to


grammatical gender:

 Masculine - ends in a consonant, -ь, or -й

 Feminine - ends in -а or -я

 Neuter - ends in -о or –е
Review of gender

Important!: nouns that end in -а or –я and refer to


male persons are masculine.

Don’t forget!:
мой modifies a masculine noun
моя́ modifies a feminine noun.
Memorize, memorize, and memorize
some more!
