*It is a naturally occurring aggregates of one
or more minerals

SKORC ROCK
It is a rock formed from the
hardening and crystallization of
magma or molten materials that
originates within the earth.

OIEUSNG IGNEOU
S
It is a rock that provides
information about the surface
conditions that existed in the
Earth’s past.
ESIMNTEADRY
SEDIMENTAR
It involves, breaking down of rocks
into its constituent minerals or
particles with no decay of any
rocks-forming minerals.

WEATHERIN
EROSIO
DEPOSITIO
They are the Exogenic Processes
- a process that occur in the
surface of the Earth:
a. Gravity
b. Water
c. Wind
d. Organism
Types of Exogenic Processes
1. Weathering is a process of
disintegration (physical) and
decomposition (chemical) of
rocks.
- the breaking down of rocks into
smaller pieces.
Two types of weathering
1. Mechanical weathering is the
breaking down of rocks without
changing its composition.
2. Chemical weathering there are
changes in the composition of
rocks due to chemical reaction.
Factors of Mechanical weathering
1. Pressure: collision of rocks
creates extreme pressure which
weather rocks.
2. Temperature: most materials
expand when they are heated
and contract when they are
cooled.
Factors of Mechanical weathering

3. Frost Wedging: splitting or breaking

- up of rocks by the pressure of ocean
water (ice) in cracks in the rocks, the
pressure in the ice is exerted to the
rocks causing them to break apart.
Factors of Mechanical weathering
4. Abrasion: is the rubbing,
scouring or scraping of rocks
through friction.
5. Organic activity: happens
when plants break up rocks with
their growing roots or plant acids
help dissolve rock.
Factors of Mechanical weathering
6. Human activity: human activities
can speed it up.
7. Burrowing animals: can break rocks
and stir sediments causing physical
weathering. Animals that burrow can
also bring fresh material to the surface
where physical and chemical weathering
can work more efficiently.
2. Chemical weathering - the
process of chemicals in rainwater
making changes to the minerals in a
rock.
a. Dissolution: rocks and mineral
are dissolved in water.
b. Hydrolysis: breaking down of
rocks by acidic water to produce
clay and soluble salt.
acid in water reacts in some type
of rocks like feldspar to form clay,
water may also react with sodium-
rich minerals forming salt solution.
c. Oxidation: breaking down of
rocks by oxygen in/ and water
often giving iron-rich rocks a
rusty-colored weather surface.
2. Erosion: is the separation and
removal of weathered rocks due
to the different agents like wind,
water and ice that causes the
transportation of the minerals to
where they were deposited.
3. Mass Wasting: is the
movement of the sediments
downslope under the influence of
gravity like fall, slide, avalanche
and flow.
- it is also known as slope
movement or mass movement.
Factors affecting of Mass Wasting
1. Water
2. Soil cover
3. Geologic features
4. Triggering events
Types of Mass Wasting
1. Falls/rock falls
Types of Mass Wasting
2. Rock slides/debris
3. Mudflows/flows
4. Slumps
5. Creep
4. Depositions: is the process in
which weathered materials
carried out by erosion settle
down in a particular location.
