Neurotechnology

The document discusses how brain-computer interfaces (BCI) can directly link the brain to external devices like computers by detecting electric signals in the brain, how the company Neuralink is working to develop implantable BCI devices to control technology just by thinking, and that while BCI has promising applications, there are also ethical and security risks that need consideration as the technology advances.

“PASS YOUR
THOUGHT,
NEUROTECHNOLOGY
What is Neuron?

• Neurons, also known as nerve cells.

• Primarily responsible for transmitting

information throughout the body.

• It communicate with other cells through

electrical and chemical signals.
WHAT IS NEUROTECHNOLOGY

 Neurotechnology is a rapidly growing field, used to

study and manipulate the nervous system.
 Technical and computational tools that measure and
analyze chemical and electrical signals in the nervous
system.
 It encompasses any method or electronic device
which interfaces with the nervous system to monitor
or modulate neural activity.
BCI (Brain-Computer Interface)
• Provide a direct communication link
between the brain and a computer or
other external devices.
• It does so by using electrodes to detect
electric signals in the brain which are sent
to a computer.
• The computer then translate these
electric signals into data which is used to
control a computer, or a device linked to
a computer.
Architecture of Brain Computer Interface
FUTURE SCOPE

• Improve the quality of human living with applications

like flying an aeroplane just by thinking, a blind driving
a vehicle etc. Will be coming to a reality.

• Most promising applications of BCI is in the field of

medicine and cognitive enhancement.
• Neuralink, being one of the leading companies in this
field, has the potential to play a key role in the
development of BCI and their future applications.
• Development in BCI can bring out drastic and
attractive changes to the society.
Neuralink

Neuralink Corporation is
a neurotechnology company that
develops implantable brain–computer
interfaces(BCIs) devices. Founded
by Elon Musk and a founding team of
seven scientists. The company's
mission is to "link the human brain
with a machine interface".
N1 Link
• Micro-scale threads are inserted into
areas of brain that control
movement.
• The link processes, stimulates and
transmits neural signals.
• Surgically transplanted inside head
by a robot.
• Compact inductive charger wirelessly
connects.
• Through the neuralink app, we can
control our iOS device, keyboard and
mouse, just by thinking about it.
HOW DOES THE NEURALINK SYSTEM
DIFFER FROM OTHER BCI DEVICES?

• Currently only a few approved BCI

devices that record from or
stimulate the human brain.
• There are many non-Neuralink BCI
devices being tested in pilot clinical
trials that have more than a few
hundred electrodes.
• In April 2021, Neuralink
demonstrated a monkey playing the
game "Pong" using the Neuralink
implant.
• It is preparing for the first human
implementation soon.
Existential Risk

• There is a chance of the chip can be seized and used for

malicious purposes by cyber attackers.

• It raise important ethical questions about individual

autonomy and control over one's own mind and body.

• If a computer virus was to enter a chip, it could

potentially damage not only a user’s brain but other
parts or functions.
Conclusion
• The field of BCI is still in its early stages of development
and further research is needed to improve the
technology and make it more accessible to the general
public.

• However, with advancements in technology and

increasing research, the future for BCIs is promising.
