Light Dimmer Using Diac & Triac

A light dimmer circuit uses a diac and triac to control the intensity of an AC light bulb. The diac fires when its breakover voltage is exceeded, triggering the triac to conduct current through the load for a portion of each half-cycle. The RC timing circuit of a potentiometer and capacitor determines the phase delay to control dimming. A prototype was built using a triac, which conducts during phase control operation, and a diac, which is a bi-directional triggering device that works in both voltage polarities of an AC signal.

What is Light
Dimmer!
An circuit to control the intensity of a an AC bulb .During each half
cycle when the breakover voltage of diac exceeds it fires triac and
current flows though the load . The RC constant of potentiometer and
capacitor determines the phase delay and control dimming.
Triac & Diac

Triac:
A semi conductor
device that starts
conducting when gate is triggered.
It has three pin lead .It’s peak
off-state voltage is 600V.It conducts phase control operation
in light dimmer

Diac:
Diac is a semiconductor bi-directional
device that works both in forward &
reverse bias in AC signal.
