The Computer System

The motherboard ties together all the computer's components and allows them to communicate. RAM stores data very fast, within milliseconds, and has a fast connection to the CPU. A Bluetooth card transmits and receives Bluetooth wireless signals to support Bluetooth devices. A network card connects the computer to a network. A hard drive stores all digital content like documents, photos, music and the operating system. A video card generates images to display on a monitor.

Motherboard
The motherboard is the backbone
that ties the computer's components
together at one spot and allows
them to talk to each other. Without it,
none of the computer pieces, such
as the CPU, GPU, or hard drive,
could interact.
Total motherboard functionality is
necessary for a computer to work
well.
RAM
RAM stands for Random Access
Memory. The data stored
in RAM can be accessed almost
instantly regardless of where in
memory it is stored, so it's very fast
— milliseconds fast. RAM has a very
fast path to the computer's CPU, or
central processing unit, the brain of
the computer that does most of the
work.
Bluetooth Card
A USB-based device that transmits
and receives Bluetooth wireless
signals. It plugs into the USB port to
support Bluetooth mice, keyboards
and other Bluetooth devices. Also
called a "Bluetooth dongle." See
dongle. Bluetooth Adapters.
Network Card
A network interface controller is a
computer hardware component that
connects a computer to a computer
network. Early network interface
controllers were commonly
implemented on expansion cards
that plugged into a computer bus.
Hard Drive
A hard drive is the hardware
component that stores all of your
digital content. Your documents,
pictures, music, videos, programs,
application preferences, and
operating system represent digital
content stored on a hard drive. Hard
drives can be external or internal.
Video Card
A video card (also called a graphics
card, display card, graphics adapter,
or display adapter) is an
expansion card which generates a
feed of output images to
a display device (such as
a computer monitor).
