What Are Drugs?
• A social menace, drugs, and alcohol are permeating very deep into
the lives of innocent youth, who fall prey to this. The harmful effects
of drugs and alcohol are far and many. They not only spoil the health
of the individual but also slowly make people addicted to them, who
turn out to be anti-social with behavioral issues.
A majority of the drugs are
obtained from plants, which are
again nothing but chemicals.
Some of these are opioids, coca
alkaloids,cannabinoids
(marijuana,hashish,charas and
ganja). which are got from plants.
Some other medical formulations
such as barbiturates,
amphetamines, benzodiazepines,
etc. are also misused
EFFECTS
The drugs have an effect on the central nervous system of the body. These chemicals react with the body and put the
whole body at risk. Drugs change the way the body feels. The chemicals in the drugs send the wrong signals and
messages to different parts of the body, thereby resulting in hallucinations and/or seeing and hearing things that are real.
EXAMPLES
• Coca alkaloid or cocaine is obtained from coca plant Erythroxylum coca which are
native to south America. It is called as COKE OR CRACK. On heavy dosage its cause
hallucinations.
• OPIOIDS are the drugs, which bind to specific opioid receptors present in our central
nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Heroin commonly called smack is chemically
diacetylmorphine which is a white, odorless, bitter crystalline compound. This is
obtained by acetylation of which is extracted from the latex poppy plant Papaver
somniferum. It is usually used as an depressant and slows down the body functions.
• CANNABINOIDS are a group of chemicals which interact with cannabinoid receptors
present principally in the brain. Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the
inflorescences of the plant Cannabis sativa. The flower tops, leaves and the resin of
cannabis plant are used in various combinations to produce marijuana, hashish, charas
and ganja. Generally taken by inhalation and oral ingestion, these are known for their
effects on cardiovascular system of the body
ALCHOHOL ABUSE
• A pattern of drinking that interferes with day-to-day activities.
• With alcohol abuse, a person is not yet physically dependent on alcohol but still
has a serious drinking problem.
• Their use of alcohol leads to health problems or troubles at home, at work, at
school, or with the law. Many of them have lost control of their drinking; they are
unable to stop or cut down despite serious negative health consequences and the
loss of valued activities or relationships.
HOW ALCOHOL ABUSE EFFECTS THE
BODY
• The effects of too much alcohol on the body are devastating. Health
consequences of heavy alcohol use include inflammation of the
stomach, inflammation of the liver, bleeding in the stomach and
esophagus, impotence, permanent nerve and brain damage
(numbness or tingling sensations, imbalance, inability to coordinate
movements, forgetfulness, blackouts, or problems with short-term
memory), and inflammation of the pancreas. Long-term overuse of
alcohol can also increase the risk and severity of pneumonia and
tuberculosis; damage the heart, leading to heart failure; and cause
cirrhosis of the liver, leading to liver failure.
PREVENTION AND CONTROL
• Parenting that combines with high levels of nurturance and consistent discipline,
has been associated with lowered risk of substance (alcohol/drugs/tobacco)
abuse. Some of the measures mentioned here would be particularly useful for
prevention and control of alcohol and drugs abuse among adolescents.
• Avoid undue peer pressure
• Education and counselling
• Seeking help from parents and peers
• Looking for danger signs
• Seeking professional and medical help
