Resolvers are small, reliable sensors that use electromagnetic induction to provide analog sinusoidal outputs representing the angular position or rotation of a shaft. These outputs can be fed into a resolver to digital converter to provide a digital position readout. The converter uses the resolver outputs along with a reference signal to calculate the shaft angle and generate a digital word that continuously and accurately represents the shaft's rotational position.

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - MADRAS Section through a resolver RESOLVERS Indirect linear (or) direct angular measurement sensors – used in machine position control systems – small in size, high reliability and accuracy units
Construction is similar to a small electric motor with precision
windings
Stator has two groups of windings wound on planes
perpendicular to each other i.e. 90o to each other
Rotor carries another winding excited by a high frequency
AC voltage i.e. 10 kHz
Induces voltages in the stator windings and are proportional
to cosine and sine of the angle of rotation α Functional principle of a resolver

RESOLVERS • Resolvers produce analog output
• Converters are needed to provide digital
format for interfacing with digital NC and other systems
• R/D converters – practical approach to
overall digital positioning systems and are preferred over encoders COMPONENTS OF A RESOLVER SYSTEM RESOLVER TO DIGITAL CONVERTER
AC reference voltage
250 Hz to 16000 Hz RESOLVER TO DIGITAL CONVERTER
• Outputs of resolver windings are fed into sine and cosine
multipliers and then
• Output is fed into a summing amplifier, which subtracts the
two signals and provides a signal that is proportional to the angle α
• Phase detector demodulates this signal, using the resolver
rotor voltage as a reference – this results in a DC signal proportional to the angle α (analog DC signal is proportional to speed and direction)
• This DC signal drives a Voltage controlled Oscillator (VCO)
RESOLVER TO DIGITAL CONVERTER • VCO drives an up/down counter to provide a digital output representing the angle α
• The signal from up/down counter into the sine/cosine
converters forces the output of the digital counter to be equal to the input angle α RESOLVERS ADVANTAGES OF R/D CONVERSION
WITH CONSTANT INPUT, OUTPUT DIGITAL WORD CONTINUOUSLY
FOLLOWS INPUT, WITH NO PHASE LAG BETWEEN DIGITAL WORD AND ACTUAL SHAFT POSITION
VOLTAGE DROPS DO NOT AFFECT PERFORMANCE AS THE OPERATION
ONLY DEPENDS ON THE RATIO BETWEEN TWO INPUT SIGNALS
DOUBLE INTEGRATION MAKES THIS APPROACH HIGHLY IMMUNE TO
NOISE
ANALOG DC VOLTAGE OUTPUT IS A DIRECT INDICATION OF SPEED
(VELOCITY) THUS ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR A SEPARATE TACHOMETER
