WHAT IS

TRADITIONAL
MEDICINE ?
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
(also known as indigenous medicine or folk medicine)

• Comprises medical aspects of


traditional knowledge that developed
over generations within the folk beliefs
of various societies, including
indigenous peoples, before the era of
modern medicine.

• Refers to medical system based on


traditional, cultural practices of people.
COMPLEMENTARY AND
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

Both terms refers to treatments, like herbs or


acupuncture that are out of the medical
mainstream.

Refers to the use of a non- mainstream practice


in place of conventional or allopathic medicine.
COMPLEMENTARY
• It is the standard treatment. Used together
conventional or western biomedicine.
EXAMPLE:

Aromatherapy
Acupuncture

ALTERNATIVE
• Used instead of standard treatment. It is
used in place of conventional medicine.

EXAMPLE:

Ayurveda Medicine
Chiropractic

It is a health care law passed on December 9,


1997 sponsored by then senator Juan Flavier.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ACT ARE AS
FOLLOWS:

To develop and coordinate skills


training courses for various forms
of traditional and alternative health
care modalities.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ACT ARE AS
FOLLOWS:

To promote scientific research and


develop both traditional and
alternative healthcare systems that
directly impact public health care.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ACT ARE AS
FOLLOWS:

To promote and advocate the use of


traditional, alternative, preventive
and curative health care modalities
that have been proven safe,
effective, cost effective and
consistent with government
standards on medical practice;
.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ACT ARE AS
FOLLOWS:

The goal is to establish ethical


standards and guidelines for
traditional and alternative
healthcare practices, including
manufacturing, quality control, and
marketing of natural and organic
products.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ACT ARE AS
FOLLOWS:

To formulate policies for the


protection of indigenous and
natural health resources and
technology from unwarranted
exploitation, for approval and
adoption by the appropriate
government agencies.
WHAT CAN THIS ACT DO?
This law sees to it that the government
fulfills its responsibility in providing quality
health care options to every Filipino through
developing traditional and alternative
medicinal methods and integrating them into
the existing national health care system.
