LESSON 2 Joint and Combined Variations
LESSON 2 Joint and Combined Variations
COMBINED
VARIATIONS
LESSON 2
OBJECTIVES:
The learner will be able to:
1.illustrates situations that involve joint and
combined variations;
2.translate into joint and combined variation
statement a relationship between two quantities
given mathematical equations; and
3.solve problems involving joint and combined
variations.
QUESTIONS:
What happened to the area
when the length is doubled,
and the width is the same?
What happened to the area
when the length is tripled,
and the width is the same?
When the width is doubled,
what happened to the area?
The area of a
rectangle is
“proportional to
the product of its
length and width”.
JOINT
VARIATION
Joint Variation
Joint variation takes place
when one quantity varies
directly as the product of
two or more other
quantities.
EXAMPLE 1:
STATEMENT SYMBOL EQUATION
z varies jointly as x and y
The area of a triangle varies
jointly as the base and the
height.
L varies jointly as m and the
square of n
The pressure of a gas varies
jointly as its density and its
absolute temperature.
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the constant of variation and the
equation of variation:
a. If y varies jointly as x and z, and y = 6 when x
= 10 and z = 8.
b. Find an equation of variation in which y
varies jointly as x and z and y = 45 when x =
18 and z = 10.
EXAMPLE 3:
Solve the following:
a. If y varies jointly as x and z, and y = 6 when x
= 10 and z = 8, find y when x = 4 and z = 40.
b. Find an equation of variation in which y
varies jointly as x and z and y = 45 when x =
18 and z = 10. Find y when x = 20 and z =
30.
EXAMPLE 4:
Solve the given problem below.
The lateral area of a cylinder varies jointly
with the height and radius of the cylinder. If
a cylinder, with radius 3 cm and height 5
cm, has a lateral area of 30, what is the
lateral area of a cylinder when its radius is 2
cm and its height is 8 cm?
COMBINED
VARIATIONS
Combined Variation
•A variation is referred to as
combined variation if one
quantity varies directly or
jointly as the other
quantities.
REMEMBER:
• A joint variation maybe considered as a
special type of combined variation. By
definition, a joint variation is described
by the equation , where is the
constant of variation. On the other
hand, a combined variation involves
more than one kind of variation.
REMEMBER:
COMBINED VARIATION
A combined variation is defined by
the equation or , where k is the
constant of variation.
EXAMPLE 1:
STATEMENT SYMBOL EQUATION
G varies directly as h and
inversely as j
B varies jointly as C and D and
inversely as E.
m varies jointly as the square
of n and cube of p and
inversely as q.
y varies directly as the cube
root of x and inversely as the
square of z.
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the constant of variation and
equation of variation of the following.
a.The variable y varies directly as x and
inversely as z. If y = 15 when x = 5 and
z = 3, find the constant of variation
and equation of variation.
b. The variable L varies jointly as m and n,
and inversely as p. If L = 20 when m = 5 and
n = 2 and p = 4, find the constant of
variation and equation of variation.
c. Find the constant of variation and an
equation of combined variation where r
varies directly as the square of s and
inversely as t. If the set of values is r = 10,
s = 5, and t = 75.
EXAMPLE 3:
Solve the following problems.
a.The variable varies directly as the product of
and , and inversely as the square of . If when ,
, and , find the value of when , , and .
