Lab - Week 4-Question and Solution

This document provides information to solve a truss problem in three steps: 1) Find the deflection of the nodes by constructing element stiffness matrices, assembling them into a global stiffness matrix, applying boundary conditions to reduce the system, and solving the reduced system of equations. 2) Determine the forces and stresses in each member by multiplying the element stiffness matrices by the displacement vector. 3) Determine the reaction forces at the supports by considering the forces required to balance the applied loads.

Lab- Question 1: Solve the following truss problem

•Find the deflection of the nodes.

•Determine the forces and stresses in each member.

•Determine the reaction forces at the supports.

𝐸 and 𝐴 values are the same for each member.

Notes:

There are 𝑁𝐸=3 elements and 𝑁𝑁=3 nodes.

•At each node there are 𝑁𝑁𝑈=2 unknown deflections. Totally there are 𝑁𝑈=6 unknowns (6DoF).
•4 of these unknowns are known. Nodes 1 and 2 are pinned support.
•We need to determine 2 displacements (horizontal and vertical) at node 3 and, the reaction forces at nodes 1 and 2.
Construct Element stiffness matrix (Global):
