Exposition Text

The document discusses two types of exposition text: analytical and hortatory. Analytical exposition aims to persuade the reader that something is the case, while hortatory exposition aims to convince the reader to do something. Both share a similar structure of thesis, arguments, and conclusion, but differ in communicative purpose and use of language features. Examples are provided for each type.

Example of analytical exposition
School
I think children should go to school. It is a place where they can
learn, make friends and have fun. (thesis)

If they don’t go to school children may never learn to read and

write. This means that they might not get a good job or any job
at all. (point & elaboration)
At school children can learn about lots of different things like
maths, science, famous people and different countries.
At school you can also play sport and go on excursions to visit
interesting places.

That’s why children should go to school. (Reiteration)

The importance of breakfast
 Breakfast is food or drink that is usually eaten
in the morning before doing activities and I
believe it is very important and needed for
our body.
 I have many reasons why breakfast is very

important. First …., second…, third ….

 Based on the arguments above, that’s why

breakfast is very important and needed for

our body

Another example of analytical:
English is the most important language in the
world.
It is the language spoken at the United Nations;
it is also the official language of diplomacy. In
addition, English is useful in many
occupations. For example, air traffic
controllers all over the world must be able to
speak English.
Since English is so important, it is a
compulsory subject in any level of school in
Indonesia
Another example
Transporting Oil
I think we should protect our environment by
transporting oil more savely. (thesis)
Ships can spill oil and it can make a slick and
fish and animals and birds can die. (point)
They die because the oil stops them from
breathing. (elaboration)
This is why we should transport oil safely.
(conclusion)
Thank you

Example of hortatory exposition text
I think Indonesian president should be a
male, over forty years old, a retired military,
and handsome. He should be wise and has
a good image among ordinary people.
I believe you’ll agree that the only person
who meets those qualifications is SBY. So,
there is no reason not to elect SBY as our
president; only the fool will choose other
candidates.
School
I think children should go to school. It is a place where they
can learn, make friends and have fun. (thesis)

maths, science, famous people and different countries.
At school you can also play sport and go on excursions to visit
interesting places.

Therefore, every parent should send their children to school to

get knowledge and experiences. (Recommendation)
Are you sick of the rubbish on the sides of
our roads?
Everyday, more and more rubbish is thrown from cars. It is time to
do something about it and you can help.
Drivers need to set a good example to children. This can be done
by having a rubbish bag in the car. Any rubbish would be placed
in the bag then put into a bin at the end of the journey. Make
sure you have a garbage bag in your car.
Cans and bottles should be recycled. These should not be thrown
from cars or even put in rubbish bins. Glass and aluminium can
be recycled and should be taken to recycling stations. This not
only prevents pollution but saves our natural resources.
Dob in a dumper. If you see someone throwing rubbish from a car,
take the registration number and report it to the police.
We need to show how pretty the roadside can be without rubbish. If
you would like to volunteer some time next weekend to help
clean up the Gosford Road, then ring me on (043) 001 999.
Why water shouldn’t be wasted
Water is a resource we need for drinking, cooking, washing and growing
things. Water should not be wasted for several reasons.
Firstly, people often use more water than they need. They may leave the
sprinkler on the lawn all day or wash only a few clothes in the washing
machine. If everybody uses too much water, the storage dams may run out
and there will be no water left.
Another argument is that water costs money. If you use too much water, the
water rates go up and you have to pay more money. Paying money for
wasted water could mean that there is not enough left over for important
things.
Finally, even if there is enough water in the city, people in dry areas where it
doesn’t rain very often may feel that city people do not care about them if
they don’t try to conserve water.
Therefore it is important that we think about the water we use and not waste
it. If water is used sensibly there will be enough water now and in the future.
Corruption

Thesis
Do you know what the meaning of
corruption is? What is the relation between
money and corruption? Well, corruption is
common everywhere in the world, even in
the United States. It’s just a matter of
intensity. However, it is quite shocking
when one reliable survey claims Jakarta as
the most corrupt place in Indonesia.
Argument 1

The survey has made me sad, actually, because

I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As
most people know, Tanjung Priok port
smuggling is not a new thing at all.
Entrepreneurs who want to minimize their tax
payments tend to do such a thing more often.
They even bribe the officials.
Argument 2
Well, I think the measures taken so far to
overcome the problem by punishing the
corruptors is still not far enough. We have to
prevent the younger generations from getting a
bad mentality caused by corruption
Recommendation

I believe we should start at the earliest stages

in school and I think everyone should be
involved in the effort to eradicate corruption.
We must not make any distinction.
