Types of Computer Network

A computer network connects two or more devices to share information. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs) within a building, wireless LANs (WLANs), wide area networks (WANs) spanning multiple locations, personal area networks (PANs) within 10 meters of a person, campus area networks (CANs) for organizations, and metropolitan area networks (MANs) covering areas like cities. Networks provide benefits such as file sharing, shared resources, centralized data storage, and messaging capabilities, but also have disadvantages like security risks, virus spreading, costs, and single points of failure.

TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK

WHAT ARE COMPUTER NETWORKS?

• A computer network is a system that connects two or more computing devices

for transmiting and sharing information.
• These devices are connected using physical wires such as fiber optics, but they
can also be wireless.

ADVANTAGE OF NETWORKING

• Easily shares files.

• Shares resources such as printer and internet connections.
• Store data centurally (using a file server) for ease of access and back-up
• Computer in the network can run the software installed in the file server.
• Network users can exchange meassage instantly.

DISADVANTAGES OF NETWORKING

• Data and Information may be stolen by computer hackers.

• If any computer is affected by virus, there is a chance of spreading the virus to
other computers.
• Cable and file server increase the cost of setting up the network
• The Network stops working if the server breaks down.
• Network manager and technictians are needed to run a large network,

DIFFERENT TYPES OF THE
COMPUTER NETWORK

Manahil Ali Khan 11/03/2023 5

LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)

• A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in

one physical location.

• Such as a building, office, or home. A LAN can be small or large, ranging from
a home network with one user to an enterprise network with thousands of users
and devices in an office or school.

WIRELESS LAN (WLAN)

• A Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN) is a group of collocated computers or

other devices that form a network based on radio transmissions rather than
wired connections.

• A Wi-Fi network is a type of WLAN; anyone connected to Wi-Fi while reading

this webpage is using a WLAN.

Manahil Ali Khan 11/03/2023 7

WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)

• A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a collection of local area network(LANs) or other

networks that communicate with one another.

• A WAN is essentially a network of networks, with the Internet the world's largest WAN.

• Connects your offices, data centres, cloud applications, and cloud storage together.

• It spans beyond a single building or large campus to include multiple locations spread
across a specific geographic area, or even the world.

Manahil Ali Khan 11/03/2023 8

PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN)

• A Personal Area Network (PAN) is the computer network that connects

computers/devices within the range of an individual person.

• As PAN provides a network range within a person’s range typically within a

range of 10 meters(33 feet) .

• A Personal Area Network typically involves a computer, phone, tablet, printer,

PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) and other and other entertainment devices
like speakers, video game consoles, etc.

CAMPUS AREA NETWORK (CAN)

• A Campus Area Network (CAN) provide a simple way for organizations to control
their network resources, centralize their security efforts and share data quickly.

• Campus area networks are designed with centralized control in mind. This allows
organizations to manage everything in-house where administrators have full control
over their infrastructure, QoS, and security policies.

• CANs send traffic over a local connection, meaning data rates are significantly
higher than traffic that has to travel across the internet over public infrastructure to
reach its destination.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
(MAN)

• A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users

across a geographic area that is larger than a local area network (LAN) but
smaller than the geographic area covered by a wide area network (WAN). A
MAN typically covers an area like a city.

• Like WANs, a MAN is made up of interconnected LANs. Because MANs are

smaller, they are usually more efficient than WANs, since data does not have to
travel over large distances. MANs may combine the networks of multiple
organizations into one, or they can be managed by a single organization.
