Lecture 3

The document discusses mechanical testing techniques used to determine material properties such as modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio. It provides examples of calculating stress, strain, and deformation in materials subjected to forces like compression and torsion. The document also examines more complex states of stress and suggests readings for further understanding material mechanical behavior.

Modulus of Elasticity
Modulus of Elasticity

 The force between atoms is the derivative of the energy vs distance plot

 The gradient of force vs distance gives the bond stiffness

 Based on such derivations, the modulus is dependant on bond strength

only

 Elastic properties are microstructure insensitive

Shear stress and strain
Shear stress and strain
A cylindrical steel specimen having an elastic modulus of 210GPa and
poisson’s ratio of 0.3, (length=200 mm, diameter=5 mm), is subjected to
a torque equal to 40 N· m.
- What is the deflection in the specimen end, if one end is fixed?
Shear stress and strain
A punch for making holes in steel plates is shown in the figure. Assume that a punch having
diameter of 20 mm is used to punch a hole in an 8-mm plate, as shown. If a force P=110 kN is
required to create the hole, what is the average compressive stress in the punch and the average
shear stress in the plate?
Poisson’s ratio
Poisson’s ratio:

A steel pipe of length L=4.0m, outside diameter 20.0cm, and inside diameter 10cm is
compressed by an axial force P=140N. The material has modulus of elasticity E=30,000MPa and
Poisson’s ratio n=0.30.
Determine the following quantities for the pipe: (a) the shortening d, (b) the lateral strain e, (c)
the increase d2 in the outer diameter and the increase d1 in the inner diameter, and (d) the
increase t in the wall thickness.

Complex states of stress
A sample of material subjected to a compressive stress σ z is confined so that it cannot deform in
the y-direction, as shown in the figure. Assume that there is no friction against the die, so that
deformation can freely occur in the x-direction. Assume further that the material is isotropic and
exhibits linear-elastic behavior.
Determine the following in terms of σz and the elastic constants of the material
(a) The stress that develops in the y-direction.
(b) The strain in the z-direction.
(c) The strain in the x-direction
(d) The stiffness E’= σz/ϵz in the z direction. Is this apparent
modulus equal to the elastic modulus E obtained by uniaxial
test?
