Advance Options
 Safe Mode:-This option uses a minimal set of
device drivers and services to start Windows
 Safe Mode with Networking:-This option uses a
minimal set of device drivers and services to start
Windows together with the drivers that you must
have to load networking.
 Safe Mode with Command Prompt:-This option is
the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe
starts instead of Windows Explorer.
 Enable VGA Mode:-This option starts Windows in
640 x 480 mode by using the current video driver
(not Vga.sys). This mode is useful if the display is
configured for a setting that the monitor cannot
display.
 Last Known Good Configuration:-This
option starts Windows by using the
previous good configuration
 Directory Service Restore Mode:-This
mode is valid only for Windows-based
domain controllers. This mode performs a
directory service repair.
 Debugging Mode:-This option turns on
debug mode in Windows. Debugging
information can be sent across a serial
cable to another computer that is running
a debugger. This mode is configured to
use COM2
 Enable Boot Logging: This option turns on
logging when the computer is started with
any of the Safe Boot options except Last
Known Good Configuration. The Boot
Logging text is recorded in the Ntbtlog.txt
file in the %SystemRoot% folder
 Starts Windows Normally: This option
starts Windows in its normal mode
 Reboot: This option restarts the computer
 Return to OS Choices Menu: On a
computer that is configured to starting to
more than one operating system, this
option returns to the Boot menu

Recovery Console
The Windows XP Recovery Console is a
text-mode command interpreter that you
can use to access NTFS, FAT, and FAT32
volumes without starting Windows XP. The
Recovery Console allows you to perform a
variety of troubleshooting and recovery
tasks, including the following:

 Starting and stopping services


 Reading and writing data on a local drive
 Formatting hard disks
 Repairing the MBR
Repair Installation
 Boot for the Windows Xp Operationg
System cd.
 The corrupted installation of the
Windows XP can be detected by the
Windows XP setup & we get the
option to repair that installation. The
repair process proceeds just as the
new windows installation process.
 Sfc /scannow (System File Checker):-
This is used to recover any windows
file if missing after booting the machine in
windows.
start>run>sfc /scannow
If any file will be missing user will get msg
to insert cd or to locate the i386 folder.

 Msconfig:- This utility is to used to disable


the startup item.
start>run>Msconfig
 Services.msc:- This is used to
disable or to restart any service of
windows.
start>run>Services.msc
Chkdsk:-Chkdsk will verify and repair
(optional) the integrity of the file
system on any chosen volume.
chkdsk /r
 Fixboot:-The fixboot command is a
recovery console command that
creates a new partition boot sector.
fixboot
 Fixmbr:-Repairs the master boot
record of the boot disk. The fixmbr
command is only available when you
are using the Recovery Console
fixmbr
 Format:- This command is use to
format the partition
format <drive name>
 Diskpart:-Creates and deletes
partitions on a hard drive. This
command is only available when you
are using the Recovery Console.
 WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
is missing or currupted
Solution:-
Boot machine with cd & enter in
recovery console
rename the old file to system.old
than run this command:-
ren c:\windows\system32\config\system

c:\windows\system32\config
\system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system.bak
c:\windows\system32\config\system
 Hal.dll is missing
Solution:-
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP
CD. At the first R=Repair option, press the R
key Press the number that
Corresponds to the correct location for
the installation of Windows you want to
repair.
Typically this will be #1 Type bootcfg
/list to show the current entries in the
BOOT.INI file
Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it

Type exit & restart the machine


 NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM Not Found:-
Solution:-
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP
CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the
R key
Press the number that corresponds to
the
correct location for the installation of
Windows
you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when
requested
Enter in the following commands (X: is
replaced
by the actual drive letter that is
assigned to
the CD ROM drive.
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

Take out the CD ROM and type exit


 Ntfs.sys is missing or currupted:-
Solution:-
Boot the machine with windows xp
cd & enter in recovery console
At the command prompt, type the
following commands (press ENTER after
each command)
1. cd \windows\system32\drivers
2. ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old
3. copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers

Type exit & restart the machine

Boot the machine with windows xp cd
& enter in recovery console

run command chkdsk /r

Type exit & restart the machine


 System is restarting & standing on
