Plotters:

A Plotter is an output device which print on paper, but


work very differently to printers. Instead of ink
cartridges, they use pens, pencils or markers to draw
multiple continuous lines, rather than series of dots like
a printer does. The size can be from A4 up to several
meters. They produce vector drawings and are often
used in conjunction with CAD and CAM. Some potters
are used to cut the material by replacing the blade with a
pen. However from the low production of wide-format
inkjet printers, plotters are being phased out.
Uses of plotters:

• Produce architectural
drawings
• Produce engineering drawings
• Drawing animations
characters like cartoon
characters.
Disadvantages of Plotters:

• Very slow at printing


• Expensive equipment (and software) to purchase
initially; although running costs are low once purchased.
• Have a very large physical footprint compared to a
printer.
Actuators
• Devices that move or control a
system.
• They work by receiving a signal,
like electricity, air or liquid, and
Linear actuator
then do something in response, like
opening a valve, or turning on a
light.
• Actuators convert an electrical
signal into a magnetic field
producing linear or rotary motion.

Rotary actuator
Uses

• Used to control motors, pumps, switches, buzzers etc.


• Allow a computer to control physical devices that
require analogue inputs
Advantages Disadvantages
