During Earthquake

DON’T RUN; unless you are very close to

escape door

Most earthquake-related casualties result

from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling
objects.

During Earthquake

No matter where you are, remember

the three steps

• DROP down onto your hands and

knees

• COVER your head and neck

During Earthquake

Try to Utilize the Triangle of Life

During Earthquake

• Shaking can be so strong

that you will not be able to
move far without falling down

• Do not try to leave the

building as these may
collapse resulting in getting
trapped

• Windows, facades and

architectural details are often
the first parts of the building
to collapse.
After Earthquake

• Evacuation: Evacuate the

building at the earliest following
the evacuation plan if it has
been displayed
• Expect aftershocks: Expect
secondary shockwaves which
can occur in the first hours,
days, weeks, or even months
after the quake. These can be
less violent than the main
quake but strong enough to do
additional damage to weakened
structures
After Earthquake

• Assemble: Gather at already

identified safe places (open
ground)

• Stay away from damaged

areas. Stay away unless you
are requested by the police,
fire, or relief organizations.
Return home only when
authorities allow
After Earthquake

If Trapped Under Debris

1. Do not light a match. There may be

gas leakages.

2. Do not move about or kick up dust.

Chances are you might cause more
physical damage to yourself.

3. Cover your mouth with a

handkerchief or clothing.
After Earthquake
WHEN TRAPPED UNDER DEBRIS

• Once you feel that the

earthquake has stopped, tap
on pipe or walls to make
rescuers notice you.

• Use a whistle if you have one

but do not whistle on your
own, as you might choke on
the smoke and dust.

• Shout only as a last resort.

Shouting can cause you to
inhale dangerous amounts of
dust.
