G73RDT2

The document provides examples of operations and definitions involving polynomials. It begins with examples of multiplying polynomials by listing the step-by-step work. It then defines a polynomial as an algebraic expression consisting of terms with numbers and variables raised to positive integer powers. The document continues with more examples of multiplying and dividing polynomials. It concludes with an example of dividing a polynomial.

POLYNOMIAL
A polynomial is an algebraic expression
consisting of a term or a sum of terms, each of
which is either a number or a product a product
of a number, and a positive integral power of an
unknown quantity.

OF POLYNOMIAL
MULTIPLICATION OF
POLYNOMIAL
The product of two polynomials is
obtained by taking one term of the
multiplier and multiplying the
multiplicand at a time.
EXAMPLE
Find the product of the polynomials.
1. (4x – 4)(2x + 5)
= 4x(2x + 5) – 4(2x + 5)
= 8x2 + 20x – 8x – 20
= 8x2 + 12x – 20
2. (4x – 3)(2x + 7)
= 4x(2x + 7) – 3(2x + 7)
= 8x2 + 28x – 6x – 21
= 8x2 + 22x - 21
3. (5c + 8d)(4c – 3d)
= 5c(4c – 3d) + 8d(4c – 3d)
= 20c – 15cd + 32cd – 24d
2 2

= 20c2 + 17cd – 24d2

4. (2x + 4)(4x2 + 2x – 3)
= 2x(4x2 + 2x – 3) + 4(4x2 + 2x – 3)
= 8x3 + 4x2 – 6x + 16x2 + 8x – 12
= 8x3 + 20x2 + 2x – 12

5. (x – 3)(x2 – x + 3)
= x(x2 – x + 3) – 3(x2 – x + 3)
= x3 – x2 + 3x – 3x2 + 3x – 9
= x3 – 4x2 + 6x – 9
6. (3b – 8)(6b2 – 3b + 4)
= 3b(6b2 – 3b + 4) – 8(6b2 – 3b + 4)
= 18b3 – 9b2 + 12b – 48b2 + 24b – 32
= 18b3 – 57b2 + 36b – 32
7. (x2 – 5x – 2)(x2 + 5x + 2)
= x2(x2 + 5x + 2) – 5x(x2 + 5x + 2) – 2(x2 + 5x + 2)
= x4 + 5x3 + 2x2 – 5x3 – 25x2 – 10x – 2x2 – 10x – 4
= x4 + 5x3 – 5x3 + 2x2 – 2x2 - 25x2 – 10x – 10x – 4
= x4 – 25x2 – 20x – 4
8. (x2 + 3x + 1)(x2 – x – 2)
= x2(x2 – x – 2) + 3x(x2 – x – 2) + 1(x2 – x – 2)
= x4 – x3 – 2x2 + 3x3 – 3x2 – 6x + x2 – x – 2
= x4 – x3 + 3x3 – 2x2 – 3x2 - x2 – 6x – x – 2
= x4 + 2x3 – 6x2 – 7x – 2

In finding the quotient of two polynomial, use the
same procedure in doing ordinary division with
whole numbers. The quotient rule of exponents can
be applied if needed.
EXAMPLE
1. x2 + x – 30 ÷ x + 6
2. x2 – 2x – 24 x + 4
3. 3x2 + 7x – 5 ÷ x – 3
4. 10x2 + 9x – 36 ÷ 2x – 3
