Week 6

The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, consisting of three main parts - the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The cerebrum is the largest part and is responsible for functions like perception, cognition, and movement. Different areas of the brain such as the cerebral cortex, limbic system, thalamus, and hypothalamus each have distinct roles in regulating emotions, receiving sensory information, and controlling vital functions.

BRAIN
• The most complex organ in the human body.
• It is part of the central nervous system
including the spinal cord.
• The skull protects the brain.
• It consists of three main parts such as
Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Brainstem.

Cortex
um
Cerebral Cortex
• It is the outermost surface area of the brain
and is composed of folded gray matter.
• It covers the cerebrum, which is the largest
part of the brain and,
• Is responsible for many of the brain’s
functions, including perception, cognition,
and movement
Cerebrum
• It is the largest part of the brain and is located at
the top of the brain
• It is divided into two hemispheres: the right
cerebral hemisphere (controls the left side of the
body) while the left cerebral hemisphere (controls
the right side of the body).
• The main function is to regulate senses, memory,
intellectual activities, and body movement.
Limbic System
• It composes parts of the cerebral
cortex and hypothalamus which
regulates various types of
emotions.
• It is located in the middle of the
brain, beneath the cerebral cortex
and above the brainstem.
Thalamus
• The cerebrum receives sensory information from
the Thalamus.
• It is connected to all major parts of the brain
including the cerebral cortex.
• it receives information, organizes and then sends
information to the cerebrum.
Hypothalamus
• Located below the Thalamus
• It regulates many vital bodily functions and
controlling the release of hormones.
Cerebell
• The cerebellum functions
um directly with the
cerebrum to receive information from the sensory
system and the spinal cord to regulate balance,
postures, and coordinate movement.
Brainstem
• It composes nerve fibers that carry signals to and
from all parts of the body.
• Its functions are for safety and survival such as
breathing, consciousness, heart rate, body
temperature, blood pressure, digestion, and sleep
cycles.
