Gen Math Functions

The document discusses functions and how they relate to vending machines. It provides examples of functions using ordered pairs, mapping diagrams, tables of values, and graphs. It tests whether sets of ordered pairs and graphs represent functions using concepts like no repeated inputs and the vertical line test.

LESSON 1

FUNCTIONS
Have you tried to buy something to drink using a vending machine
while choosing what kind of drink will you purchase? have you ever
stopped to think about how vending machine works?

First, you insert your money, then you press the button corresponds
with the drink you want. Lastly, you will receive the drink and enjoy
it.

A Vending Machine operates in the same way as a mathematical

function.

You put in your money in a vending machine (fig. 1). What
Number will you press if you want to:
1. Drink Coca-Cola :
2. Drink Pepsi :
3. Drink Mountain dew :
4. Eat V-Cut :
5. Eat Lay’s Classic :
6. Eat Doritos :

A function is one or more rules that are applied to an input and yield
an output. The input is the number or value put into a function. The
output is the number or value the function’s gives out.

In the vending machine that we use a while ago, the money we

inserted in to the vending machine is the input. The button we press on
the vending machine is the function and the drink we receive in return
is our output.

Model No. 1 (Set of Ordered Pairs)
Let’s use a non-empty set of ordered pairs to identify which
one is a function and which is not.

Note: An ordered pair (x, y) is listing of numbers or objects in a

prescribed order, which appearing first and second.
X is the first element and Y is the second element.
Domain = X , Range = Y

A= {(1, 2), (2, 3), (4, 5)}
Based on the given nonempty sets of ordered pairs,
is there any number that is repeated?
If yes, what is this number? .
Is this number both located in the first element?

 In a set of ordered pairs, if the First element or x-value is not

repeated, then, the set is a function. And if the first element
or x-value is repeated, then, the set is a not function.

Examples:

1. A= {(1, 3), (2, 3), (4, 5)}

 Is there any number repeated?

 What is that number?
 Is the number located in the same element? Which element?

 Is the set a Function or Not Function? Why?

2. B= {(1, 2), (0, 1), (-1, -3), (0,-2)}

 Is there any number repeated?

 What is this number?
 Is this number located in the same element?
Which element?
 Is this set a Function or Not Function? Why?

Model No. 2 (Mapping Diagram)

A function is a mapping XY, such that each element of the domain X

is paired with exactly one element in the range Y.
Examples:
Write the diagram into ordered pairs.

C= {(1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 6)}

 Is there any number repeated?

Model No. 3 (Table of Values)

In table of values, we only focus on the first row (value of X), if

there is no repetition of values, therefore, the given is a FUNCTION.
We can also list the table of values as ordered pairs.
E= {(1, 5), (2, 3), (3, 3), (4, 2)}
From the given definition, does the given show a function?

We can also list the table of values as ordered pairs.

Model No. 4 (Graph)

The figure shows

graphs which are tested by
the use of the vertical line test
whether it is a function or
not. After observing it, answer the
following questions:

 How many times does the diagonal intersect the vertical line?
____________________________
 How many times does the circle intersect the vertical line?
___________________________
 Why do you think that the first graph is the function and second graph is
not? ________________________________
