TOWER BRIDGE

BES CONSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
(1/1)
• It is a bridge in London(California).

• Built between 1886 and 1894

• Designers are Horce Jonest.Henry

Marc Brunel and John Wolfe Berry.

• It is a 1st class combined bascule and

suspension bridge
INTRODUCTION
(1/2)

• The bridge was built and

maintained by the charity
Bridge House Estates for 5
years.

• this bridge is also one of the

5 London bridges built by the
charity.
REASON FOR
MADE

• The east end of London

developed trade in the 19th
century and hence the need to
arrive access there.
OTHERS
• Bridge is 800 feet (240 m) long

• There are two horizontal walkways on

the upper level

• The upper level also has the machine

room, which was developed over time.

• An average of 40,000 crossings per

day are provided by pedestrian land
and sea traffic.
CONSTRUCTİON OF THE
BRİDGE
• The construction of the bridge took 8
years.

• an average of 432 workers worked during this time

• speed limit is 20 km/h

• The cost of the bridge is 118 million

pounds in total

• The opening of the wings of the bridge takes 5

minutes.
CONSTICTION OF THE
BRIDGE
• 70 thousand tons of concrete
sunk into the riverbed

• More than 11,000 long tons of steel was

used to frame the towers and walkways
REBUİLDİNG

• The port of London, which had

an important role during the
second world war, was
targeted by enemy soldiers
and bombed by planes as it
was an important connection
road and was shut down in
1940.

• And the bridge was reopened

in 1942
REBUILDING

• As the bridge was aging, the

authorities made a renovation
in 2008 that took 4 years and
cost 4 million pounds.

• Thus, the bridge has reached

the present day with many new
features.
DESIGN AND
CONSTRUCTION
PLANS
• Tower Bridge is made of steel covered with
masonry and stone. The bridge has a length
of 244 m with two towers 65 m high, built on
docks, combining two bridge systems,
swingarm and suspension. A swing bridge is a
kind of drawbridge that works on a pivot and
is balanced with a heavy weight.
CONSTRUCTION STAGES
• •Construction of the bridge started in 1886 and
took 8 years, employing 5 major contractors
and 432 construction workers.
• •Jones died in 1887, and his chief engineer,
Sir John Wolfe-Barry, took over the project.
Wolfe-Barry replaced Jones' original medieval
style of facade with the more
ornate Victorian gothic style that makes the
bridge a distinctive landmark.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
• •In this project they use two massive piers,
containing over 70,000 tons of concrete,
were sunk into the river bed to support the
construction. Over 11,000 tons of steel
provided the framework for the towers and
walkways. This was then clad
in Cornish granite and Portland stone, both
to protect the underlying steelwork and to
give the bridge a pleasing appearance.
SAFETY CONCERNS
• The structure of the Tower Bridge is made of steel
covered with masonry and stone.
• Tower Bridge is a structure that came together with
many construction techniques and engineering
fields.
• Therefore, the security situation should be examined
from many different perspectives.
• First of all, let's talk about the magnificent towers of
the building, which were built as reinforced • These towers are equipped to handle much more than
concrete. These unique towers sit on two opposing the load that the bridge should carry.
solid foundations formed on the Thames river. Therefore, there is no need for them to worry too mu
ch.
SAFETY CONCERNS
• On the other hand, very important parts of the
bridge that play a role in circulation are made of
steel. Steel parts, like reinforced concrete, are
strong enough to carry much more than the
amount of load the bridge needs to carry.

• In addition to all these, the bridge has an opening-

closing hydraulic system, this opening-closing
part is a part that can cause many problems.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
• The biggest problem that the structure is affected by the
environment; is always exposed to water and moisture.
• Since the structure is always exposed to moisture, it
damages the reinforced concrete and steel parts of the
structure.
• This effect is due to the fact that the building is located
on a river, but also supports this situation with the rainy
weather of london in all seasons.
CONCLUSION

• As a result, tower bridge shows us the use of steel and reinforced concrete together in a single
structure.
• In addition to its magnificent architectural beauty, it also has a hydraulic opening-closing mechanism
that moves mechanically.
• This is the reason why our company chose this structure, it shows us the unique harmony that
architecture, structural engineering and mechanical engineering create together.
