Aligarh Movement

Aligarh Movement

Aligarh Movement was the movement led by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan to: Educate the Muslims of Indian Subcontinent after the defeat of the 1857 war of independence It had enormous success and had a profound effect on the future of the Subcontinent Most successful achievement of this movement was the establishment of Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh which later became Aligarh Muslim University

An over view on the life of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan


Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was born in 1817 He initially worked on the post of a naib munshi in 1839. Then he entered the civil service by passing the judicial examination in 1841 and became a sub-judge. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan established scientific society in 1864 for translating English books to Urdu He wrote pamphlets on causes of Indian revolt (1857) In1886 he established All India Mohammedan educational conference Establishment of Indian patriotic Association (1888) Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental Defence Association (1893) Sir Syed Ahmed Khan died in 1898.

0bjectives of Aligarh Movement


To protect Islam against the onslaught of Orientalists and to prove that it was the one true religion; To remove the bitter enmity which had arisen between the Muslim and the British for religious or political reasons and to establish friendly relations between them; To reinterpret the teaching of Islam and bring them in harmony with modern science and philosophy so that educated Muslims while holding on to their religion, might take a rational and enlightened view of life and meet the demands of the new age; To persuade Muslims to learn the English language and Western sciences so that they might secure a substantial share in the administration of the country. To maintain Urdu along with English as an associate official language and to develop it through translations and original writings.

Aligarh movement Sir Syed Ahmad Khan


Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was a great reformer .He came forward to guide Muslims who were destined to be ruined and eliminated from Indian society. He revised the educational system. In the form of aligarh movement. By 1857 sir Syed ahmed khan had spent twenty five years in judical service.

The Beginning of the Aligarh Movement


To aggravate the situation the British replaced Persian ,which was the language of Muslims, which was an official language. Sir Syed always felt aggrieved over the deplorable social and economic condition of the Mulsims of India. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had observed that present condition of the Muslims was mostly because of their own extremists and conservative attitudes.

Sir Syed realised that Muslims were lagging behind in the education because of their conservative approach toward the English and modern knowledge. Sir Syed began his movement by diluting suspicion and misunderstanding between the Muslims and the British.

THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECT OF THE ALIGARH MOVEMENT


Sir Syed Aligarh movement was based on a two fold programme for the Mulsims renaissance which included modern education for Muslims and cooperation with the British Government. Sir Syed took practical steps for implementing his plans of educational uplift of the Muslims of India. In 1859 he set up a school at Muradabad where Persian and English was taught. In 1863 he established another school at Ghazipur.

Educational Aspects Of Aligarh Movement


He set up a scientific society at Ghazipur in 1864 which translated the modern works from English to Urdu and Persian to make them easier for the people to understand. The scientific society was established in 1866 known as Aligarh Institue Gazette. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan went to England in 1869 with his son Syed Mehmud who was given a scholar ships for higher studies in England.

Sir syed returned from England in 1870 and set up a body as anjuman-i- taraqi-imuslamanan-i- Hind with an objective of imparting modern knowledge to the muslims of india. The establishment of MAO college at Aligarh in 1877 was the monumental acheivement of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan with regard to the educational services for muslims of India.

On 24th May 1874 MAO High school was established at Aligarh where modern and eastern education was given. In 1877 the school was up graded to the status of a college and inaugurated by Lord Lytton. Sir Syed desired to see the college raised to level of a university which was full-filled after his death in 1920 when the college became the Aligarh Muslim University.

Political aspects of Aligarh movement


Served Muslims for the safeguard of their political interests Sir Syed after war of 1857 had advised the Muslims to keep away from politics of the country. Sir Syed on observing the extreme Hindu posture of the Congress, advised the Muslims not to join it

RELIGIOUS SERVICES OF THE ALIGARH MOVEMENT


Muslims of India were denied religious freedom because of the extremist and prejudicial Hindu attitude Sir Syed wrote the philosophical commentory on Bible known as Tabeen-al-Kalam He wrote Khutbatt-e-Ahmdiya in reply to book written on life of Muhammad and got great publication of this voluminous book

Social Services of the Aligarh movement


He published the most influential magazine Tahzib-UL- Akhlaq in which he outlined the ethical aspects of muslim league. He founded Anjuman-e- Tariki-i-urdu, which worked for the protection of urdu. He gave references from holy Quran and proved that it was un-islamic to eat with a nation who was bearer of a holy book.
