What is Environment ???
General Definition: Everything that surrounds and affects living organisms is called Environment

Law-
Provides guidelines and legal measures for effective management and protection of environment.
Education
Our planet consists of a great variety of living and non-living systems related through the environmental
changes.
Changing any part of the natural environment can cause dramatic effects on other parts of the environment.

Pollution & Pollutant

Pollutant … ???

Pollution
Pollution is the concentration of any material or energy form that is ultimately harmful to humans.
Ground pollution
Water pollution
Air pollution
10/18/2023 11
Land Pollution
Solid wastes include garbage, refuse, sludge products from agriculture, forestry, and mining that all can
pollute the land.

Water Pollution
Water pollution is anything that makes the water unfit, harmful or undesirable for use.
Types of pollutants:
Organic pollution – sewage
Inorganic pollution – biodegradable
Thermal pollution - heat
Radioactive substances –Radio Testing
Abnormal concentration of organisms –
Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
Eutrophication = increased phosphates and nitrates provide nutrients for increased algae growth.

Environment Importance at
Different Level
Global Level
Problems like global warming, ozone depletion, Acid Rain and Dwindling of Resources
Local Level
Issues which are area specific like mining problem in a particular area, Problems of solid Waste Handling etc.
Individual Level
This level includes concerns at door step.. Like safe drinking water, hygienic vicinity, etc.,
10/18/2023 21
Global Level
Acid Rain
Ozone Depletion
Global Warming
Dwindling of Resources
10/18/2023 22
Acid Rain
Acid rain (acid precipitation) is rain or snow that is more acidic than normal precipitation.
Acid rain is largely produced by burning fossil fuels (putting CO2 into the air).
10/18/2023 23
Ozone Depletion
Ozone in the atmosphere absorbs almost all the ultraviolet radiation, protecting the Earth.
10/18/2023 24
Global Warming
Governments around the work must work together to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
10/18/2023 25
Dwindling of Resources
Population Growth
Environment is changing also – but in a way that can not keep up with the growing demands of more people.
10/18/2023 26
Local Level
E.g. Steel Mill – Steel is useful in automobiles, food, beverages, building etc.
E.g. E-Waste
In todays electronic world.. Use of gadgets, electrical equipment is leading to high amount of E-waste

Urgency to Understand the
Environmental Pollution
Earth cannot assimilate beyond one limit- hence it is important to understand the Earth's Life support
System its working and on what principles does it work.

Environmental Policy
10/18/2023 33
Environmental Policy
• Reduce the impact of the University’s transport arrangements and choose alternative transport options where
feasible
• Manage the use, storage and disposal of materials to reduce environmental impact
• Manage green spaces to promote biodiversity
• Investigate green procurement options and encourage the University’s suppliers to support its objectives
• Work with Engineers, Trainers and Senior Staff and other contacts to understand their own environmental
impacts and assist them to make improvements where possible.

Operating Plans
10/18/2023 36
Operating Plans
These plans set out the responsibilities and procedures which allow the University to:
Control risks
Limit and reduce negative impacts
Promote positive impacts
Monitor progress
Develop programmes, targets and objectives for strategic improvements
