YR13 - Lecture - 01B - Introduction To Comp

The document discusses expansion slots on motherboards which allow additional hardware to be connected. It describes expansion cards like modems, sound cards, and network cards that can enhance a computer's capabilities. RAM slots are also discussed as a way to add more memory and help a computer run faster.

SAMOA COLLEGE

YEAR 13 COMPUTER STUDIES

Lecture 01-B
Personal Computer Systems and
Management
Topic: “Introduction to Computers”
Expansion Slots
 Every motherboard has expansion slots - places on
the circuit board where additional hardware pieces
can be plugged in
 These slots give you a chance to upgrade or enhance
your computer’s capabilities.

Expansion Cards
 The additional hardware pieces that we connect to the
motherboard are called expansion cards
 A modem can transfer data from one computer to
another computer.
 It is a communications device
and can connect a
computer to the
Internet.
 It connects via
telephone wire

Expansion Cards
 Sound Cards are used to output sound to speakers
and allow users to record sound into the computer
 The sound card has both input and output capabilities

 Network Cards connect computers

together in a network.
 This lets them share data (files,
programs…) and resources
(printers, scanners…)

 A communications device.

Expanded Memory
 There are also slots on the motherboard to add
RAM
 Adding more RAM is one of the easiest ways to
help the computer run faster.
Bus Lines
 A bus is a circuit that connects one part of the
motherboard to another
 Think of them as wires that connect parts of the
computer together
 These busses carry
information from
place to place
 Almost like our
buses carry people
from place to place

 This diagram shows

how the bus lines
connect all the
different hardware
parts together
 Imagine the blue
lines as metal wires
carrying data to and
from all the devices
