MANAGEMENT
• It is the process of coordinating

and overseeing the work
performance of individuals
working together in organizations,
so that they could efficiently and
effectively accomplish their chosen
aims or goals.

Functions of Management
1. PLANNING – determining the steps needed to reach the

goal, the changes and hurdles to anticipate, and utilization of
resources and opportunities to reach the expected outcome.

2. LEADING – motivating employees and influencing their

behavior to achieve organizational objectives.

3. ORGANIZING – establishing effective authority relationships

among selected work, people, and work places in order for the
group to work together efficiently; also process of dividing
work into sections and departments.

4. CONTROLLING – checking actual performance against the

standards or plans, ensuring its progress, and monitoring its
results for improvement.

5. STAFFING – recruiting employees by evaluating their skills,

knowledge, and offering them specific job roles accordingly.

1. AUTOCRATIC – also called authoritarian leadership,

characterized by individual control over all decisions and little
input from group members.

2. DEMOCRATIC – also called participative leadership or

shared leadership, wherein members of the group take a more
participative role in the decision-making process.

3. LAISSEZ-FAIRE – leadership with an attitude of trust and

reliance on their employees
- Leaders do not give too much instruction of guidance
- Subordinates and team members have the real lead

Theories of Management
1. Scientific Management Theory

- In the 1880s, Frederick W. Taylor – Father of Scientific
Management
- Improves economic efficiency and labor productivity as it
apply science to the engineering of processes to
management.

3. Fayol’s Theory of Management

- In the early 1900s, Henri Fayol identified the 14 principles of

4. Hawthorne Studies
- Examines the different aspects of the work environment
(such as lighting, timing of breaks, length of the workday)
on the work productivity
- Also, the effect of improvement in performance caused by
observing workers.

5. The Systems Approach

- Organization can be seen as either an open system, where
it interacts with its external environment, or a closed
system.

6. Theory X and Theory Y

- American Social Psychologist Douglas McGregor Theory X and
Theory Y.
* Theory X – the assumption is that employees dislike work,
are lazy, dislike responsibility, and must be coerced to
perform.
* Theory Y – the assumption is that employees like work, are
creative, seek responsibility, and can exercise self-direction.
