The document discusses operations that can be performed on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of functions. It provides examples of applying each operation to sample functions, such as adding two functions f(x) and g(x) or multiplying functions f(x) and g(x). It also includes practice problems for the reader to work through.

Operation on Function

Recap

What is function?

A function is an expression that is used to show

a relation between two or more variables. If a
function has two variables, then one variable
will be the input variable while the other will be
the output variable.
What are operation on
function?
Operations on function are the arithmetic rules we
can apply to two or more functions. Functions can be
added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided against each
other, and we can divide function operations into four
types
What is Addition of the
Function?

When two or more functions are added together,

it is called the addition of functions or functions
addition rule.

Example
Given: Find:a. (f+q)(x)
f(x) = 5x – 6
g(x) = 4x 7
a. (f+q) (x) = f(x) + g(x)
= 5x – 6 + 4x 7
(f+q) (x) = - 9x +1

What is Subtraction of the
Function?

When two or more functions are

subtracted, it is called the subtraction of
functions or functions subtraction rule.
For example, we have two functions
and
and if we subtract them, then we will get

Example
Given: b. (f-q)(x)
f(x) = 5x – 6
(f-q)(x) = f(x) – g(x)
g(x) = 4x 7 = 5x-6 - (4x+7)
= 5x-6 – 4x+7
= 1x -13

What is Multiplication of the
Functions ?

let us consider an example of function

operations multiplication: we have two
functions f(x) and g(x) and if we multiply
them together, then we will get

Solving for multiplication on function
Example:

Given: Find: (f∙g) (x)

f(x)= 2+ 5x -3
g(x)= 5x -6 (f∙g)(x)= f(x)∙g(x)
= (2+ 5x -3) (5x -6)
= 10 -12+ 25-30x -15x +18
(f∙g)(x) = 10 +13 -15x+18
Seatwork :

Given Find: (f∙g) (x)

:
f(x)= 7+ 6x-9 (f∙g)(x)= f(x)∙g(x)
g(x)= 8x +7 = (7+ 6x -9) (8x +7)
= 56 + 49+ 48+42x -72x - 63
(f∙g)(x) = 56 + 97 +114x+63
What is division on function?

To understand the function operations division,

suppose we have two functions
and
and if we divide them, then we will get
Solving for Division on function
Example:
Given: f(x) + 4x -2
f(x)= + 4x -2
Find g(x 6x -3
g(x)= 6x -3 : )
(x+1) (x-2)
6(x-2)

f(x)
6(x+1)
g(x
)
Quiz:

Given:

1. f(x) = 3x2 + 7x
find (f + g)(x).
g(x) = 2x2 - x – 1

2 f(x) = 3x2 + 7x find: (f∙g) (x)

g(x) = 2x2 -
x-2
3. f(x) = 3x2 - 2x + 1 find: (f∙g) (x)
g(x) = 7x - 4

f(x)
4.f(x) = x2 - 2x + 1 find:
g(x)
g(x) = 7x - 3
