LECTURE 16.
3: SAMPLE PROBLEMS (THE FIRST LAW : THE MACHINERY)
Physical Principles 1 Lecture
Sherrie Mae M. Vinluan Adamson University Chemical Engineering Department SAMPLE PROBLEMS 1) A vapour at 22 atm and 5.0°C was allowed to expand adiabatically to a final pressure of 1.00 atm; the temperature fell by 10.0 K. Calculate the Joule–Thomson coefficient, μ, at 5.0°C, assuming it remains constant over this temperature range. SAMPLE PROBLEMS 2) The isothermal compressibility of lead at 293 K is 2.21×10−6 atm−1. Calculate the pressure that must be applied in order to increase its density by 0.08 per cent. SAMPLE PROBLEMS 3) Given that μ = 1.11 K atm−1 for carbon dioxide, calculate the value of its isothermal Joule–Thomson coefficient. Calculate the energy that must be supplied as heat to maintain constant temperature when 12.0 mol CO2 flows through a throttle in an isothermal Joule–Thomson experiment and the pressure drop is 55 atm. SAMPLE PROBLEMS 4) The volume of a certain liquid varies with temperature as V = V ′{0.77 + 3.7 × 10−4(T/K) + 1.52 × 10−6(T/K)2} where V ′ is its volume at 298 K. Calculate its expansion coefficient, α, at 310 K.
