LECTURE 14.

2:
LIQUID AND VAPOR
MIXTURES
(SAMPLE PROBLEMS)

Physical Principles 1 Lecture

Adamson University
Chemical Engineering Department
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
7) Calculate the composition of the vapor
phase in equilibrium with a solution
containing 40.0 g benzene and 60.0 g
toluene at 300C. The vapor pressures at
this temperature are 118.2 mmHg and
36.7 mmHg, respectively.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
8) Suppose that in an ideal 2-liquid
solution, XA = 0.40 and the
temperature is lower than the
boiling point of component A.
a) What will happen when the
temperature is raised?
b) What can be said about the
compositions and amounts of the
phase where there are 2 in
equilibrium?
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
9) When an unknown organic compound was
steam distilled at an atmospheric pressure
of 753.6 mmHg, the boiling temperature is
84.50C. The layers in the distillate were
separated and weighed; the water weighed
8.61 g and the organic compound, 38.45 g.
Calculate the molar mass of the unknown
compound.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
10) A common application of the distribution
phenomenon is the test for iodide ion, in
which the ion is oxidized to iodine. Adding
CCl4 and shaking will remove most of the
iodine from water, as can be seen by the
characteristic red-violet color of I2 in CCl4.
If we measure the concentrations of I2 in
both solvents and find I2 in CCl4 is 0.0560 M
and I2 in H2O is 0.000655 M, what is the
value of the distribution coefficient?
