What is Statistics?
Statistics (Applied)
A science of collection,
organization, analysis,
interpretation and presentation of
quantitative data to arrive at a
conclusion.
Types of Statistics
1. Descriptive Statistics
Statistical methods that concerns with the
development of certain indices from the raw
data. It summarizes collected/classified data.
Areas of Statistics

2. Inferential Statistics
Statistical methods that generalized results
beyond the data collected provided that the data
collected is a part of a large set of items. It is
also known as sampling statistics.
-it is concerned with two major problems:
 Estimation of population parameters
 Testing of statistical hypothesis
Exercise 1: Classify whether the statement belongs to the area of
Descriptive Statistics (DS) or inferential statistics (IS).

1.Cigarette smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. IS

2. 80% of the employees of the company were absent
for at least 10 working days. DS
3. Does Manny Pacquiao’s income from the pay-per-
view exceeds his prize money from the last
boxing bouts? DS
4. Girls learn to speak in an earlier age than boys. IS
5. An ecologist says that the fish in a certain pond has 400
units of mercury on the average. DS
6.Five percent of all suicides are committed by teen-
agers. IS
7. Is the sales of a specific product improving or not? DS
8.One thirds of the patients in UERM suffered from
Dengue fever. IS
9.Seventy percent of the class will join the acquaintance
party. DS
10.Eating two bananas per day will increase energy. IS
Population and Sample
Universe is the set of all entities under
study.
Population set of all possible values of
the variable.

measure pertaining to a sample.
Variables
Characteristics that may vary from unit to
unit, e.g., a person, a family, a firm, the
monthly weight gain (or loss) for an
individual.
Types of Variables
1. Qualitative Variables
This is categorical since it does not strictly
take on numeric values.
2. Quantitative Variables
Variables that are numerical , data whose
size are meaningful, answer questions such as
“how much “ or “ how many”.
Quantitative Variables may be
classified as:
Discrete – variables that can be
counted.
Continuous –those that can be
measured.
Seatwork 3.1. Identify the following as qualitative or quantitative
variable. If quantitative, classify whether discrete or continuous.
1. Income per month of the employee. Continuous
2. Citizenship Qualitative
3. Number of UE Faculty Discrete
4. Car-license number Qualitative
5. Yield of corn plant Continuous
6. Color of the skin Qualitative
7. Number of children in an orphanage Discrete
8. Air temperature of the Gobbi Desert Continuous

9. Number of shares sold in the stock market Discrete

10. Area code Qualitative
