SELF
SO, WHAT IS
MATERIAL SELF?
William James’ meaning of Material Self
According to William James, material self pertains to
the objects, places, and even people which have the
label “mine”.
Such possessions are viewed as extensions of
individual’s identities.
“We are what we have”.
COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL SELF
HOME
IMMEDIATE FAMILY
CLOTHES
BODY
BODY
Inner most part of our material self.
We strive to make sure that this body functions well and
look good.
We tend to have a certain preferential attachment to
certain parts because of its value to us.
For example, you like your face much better than other
body parts because you take care of it more than other
body parts.
CLOTHES
The style, the brand, and the fabric of our clothes
have symbolic significance to us.
What we wear affects our attitude and behavior.
Clothing is a form of self expression.
Under this category, we may also include other
material components like cars, house, money, etc.
IMMEDIATE FAMILY
These people shapes and influence the development of
self identity.
Our siblings, parents, and friends holds a great
importance to us.
Whatever they do or become greatly affects us.
Pets could also symbolically define a person’s identity
because they could reflect our social status, pride and
prestige.
HOME
It is the earliest nest of our selfhood.
Home is like an extension ourselves because
we feel comfortable when we’re at our home.
EFFECTS OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS
Regardless of how many or little material possessions people
have, they are interested in material possession.
Material possessions can be used as status or symbols.
It can be a reflection of hard work and success. People tend to
measure success through material possession.
Material possession can be a source of motivation to work
harder to achieve them.
On the other hand, losing of material possession can affect our
mental health negatively.
MATERIALISM
Materialism is basically giving too much
value or importance to a material possession.
This is the negative effect of the strong desire
for material possession.
MATERIALISTIC PERSON

materialism.

Lack or loss of material possessions could lead to
anxiety, insecurity, and depression.
CONSUMER BEHAVIOR
Consumer behavior is the study of
consumers and the processes they use to
choose, use (consume), and dispose of
products and services, including consumers’
emotional, mental, and behavioral responses.
4 TYPES OF CONSUMER BEHAVIOR
COMPLEX BUYING BEHAVIOR- Mostly encountered when consumers are buying
an expensive, infrequently bought product. They are highly involved in the purchase
process and consumers’ research before committing to a high-value investment.
DISSONANCE-REDUCING BUYING BEHAVIOR- The consumer is highly
involved in the purchase process but has difficulties determining the differences between
brands. ‘Dissonance’ can occur when the consumer worries that they will regret their
choice.
HABITUAL BUYING BEHAVIOR- Habitual purchases are characterized by the fact
that the consumer has very little involvement in the product or brand category.
VARIETY SEEKING BEHAVIOR- a consumer purchases a different product not
because they weren’t satisfied with the previous one, but because they seek variety.
CONSUMERISM
Consumerism is the belief that personal wellbeing and
happiness depends to a very large extent on the level of
personal consumption, particularly on the purchase of
material goods.
The idea is not simply that wellbeing depends upon a
standard of living above some threshold, but that at the
center of happiness is consumption and material
possessions.
CONSUMERIST SOCIETY
A consumerist society is one in which people devote a great deal
of time, energy, resources and thought to “consuming”.
The general view of life in a consumerist society is consumption
is good, and more consumption is even better.
The United States is an example of a hyper-consumerist society.
People are constantly bombarded with advertisements urging
them to buy things.
Some people in the Philippines are also hyper-consumer
especially the wealthy people.
