MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
Most medical terms are derived from Greek and
Latin words.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
A medical term has three basic parts:
• Root word
• Prefix
• Suffix
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
The ROOT WORD is the main part of the medical
term that denotes the meaning of the word.

Examples:
colo colon
hemat blood
phlebo vein
aero air
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
The PREFIX is found at the beginning of the term
and it shows how meaning is assigned to the word.

Examples:
a/an without, absence
hyper increased, above
poly many
pre before
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
The SUFFIX is found at the terminal portion or at
the end of the term. Denotes the meaning to the root
word.
Examples:
megaly enlargement
uria urine
emia blood
ostomy To make an opening or
mouth
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
It is a rule that if the suffix starts with a consonant, a
combining vowel needs to be used (usually the letter
O).

The combining vowel does not change the meaning

of the the root word and is added in order to make
the pronunciation of the word easier.

The combining vowel is added between the root

word and the suffix.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
Examples:

Hemat + logy = Hematology – study of blood

Phlebo + tomy = Phlebotomy – The process of

cutting into the vein using a needle
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
When the word root is combined with another word
root or a suffix that does not begin with a vowel.
Examples:
The root word for heart is “cardi”

The combining form is “cardi/o”

The suffix “logy” means ”study of”

The study of the heart is “cardiology”

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
A combining vowel is not used when the suffix already
begins with a vowel.

Examples:
The root word for liver is “hepat”

The suffix for inflammation is “itis”

Inflammation of the liver is “hepatitis”

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
The combining vowel, however, remains between
two word roots even if the second root begins with a
vowel.
Example:
The root word for electricity is “electr”

The combining form is “electr/o”

The root word for brain is “encephal”

The suffix for written record is “gram”

A written record of the electricity of the brain =

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
A written record of the electricity of the brain

= “Electroencephalogram”
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
When defining a medical term, begin at the last
part of the word (suffix), then define the first
part of the word (prefix), and, last, define the
middle of the word (word root).

“Electro/encephalo/gram”
= A written record of the electricity of the brain
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
The plural form of medical terms is made by
changing the end of the word and not by simply
adding S, which follows the rule for irregular nouns.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGIES
Examples:
Singular Plural
Bacterium Bacteria
Nucleus Nuclei
Thrombus Thrombi
Bacillus Bacilli
Ovum Ova
Spermatozoon Spermatozoa
