Lesson 6 Scientific Investigation How Much Watering

1. Angela wants to determine if radish seeds will sprout if watered every day at an amount similar to average rainfall. She plans an experiment to test different water amounts and ensure it is a fair test. 2. Angela collects containers, soil, and radish seeds. She decides to test 500mL of water per day in some containers and 250mL in others. 3. The lesson explains the importance of conducting scientific investigations and fair tests where only one variable is changed while others are kept the same.

A fair test is one where only one variable
is changed. While other variables are

Fair Testing
Angela wanted to find out if radish seeds would sprout
if she watered them every day about as much as it
rains usually. “I think the seeds will not germinate if I
water them too much.” She thought to herself “I
wonder what experiment I could do to find out the
answer and make sure it’s a fair test?”
Fair Testing
Angela bought a packet of radish seeds and then collected
some containers and some garden soil from her father’s
garden shed. She decided that she would test two different
amounts of water to see which amount made the seeds
germinate/sprout quicker. Angela worked out that she
needed 500mL a day to keep the soil moist in her containers.
So, she decided she would use 500mL in containers marked
sample A and 250mL in the containers marked sample B
Question 1:

Q1. What should Angela

use to measure the amount
of water she intends to use
each day?
What should Angela use to measure the
amount of water?

Measuring cup
Question 2:

How should Angela

prepare the containers she
will put the seeds in?
How should she determine the precise
amount of the soil?

measure the soil using a

measuring cup.
Question 3:

Suggest a method that Angela

should now use to put the
seeds in the container and set
up a schedule for watering
Component 4C
Question 1
How should Angela measure which seeds sprouted
more quickly?

✔ the number of sprouts in each container at the

same time each day and record the results in a
table.
Question 2:

Where should Angela place

the containers that she will
water each day?
Question 3

3. Why did Angela need to

have three containers in
each sample and why did
they all have to be in the
same position outside?
Lesson Conclusion
Question 1:
Has this lesson helped you to
better understand what fair
testing means in Science?
How?
Question 2:

Do you find Angela’s

experiment interesting? If so,
why?
