Chapter 2 - Representation of Data

Here are 3 sample questions for your final exam: 1. The frequency polygon shows the daily French fry waste in pounds for some number of days at Green Spice. What can you infer about the class interval length and number of days studied based on the information provided in the frequency polygon? 2. Referring to the frequency polygon for Green Spice's daily French fry waste, approximately how many days had a waste amount between 12 to 16 pounds? 3. Which class interval, or range of pounds of daily fry waste, had the highest number of days according to the frequency polygon for Green Spice? I hope these sample questions are helpful as you prepare for your final exam. Let me know if

Chapter – 2

Representation of data

Course :
Business Statistics
Tahmina Sultana
Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Management, BUP
There are two types of data representation in Statistics.
1. Tabular representation of data: An orderly
presentation of numerical facts in tabular form using
row and column is called tabular representation.
 Frequency distribution
 Stem and leaf plot

2. Graphical Representation of Data: Graphical

representation is the visual representation of statistical
data in the form of points, lines, areas and other
geometrical forms and symbol. Graphical representation
of data is more effective than tabular representation.
Diagrams of frequency distribution ( For qualitative variable)
 Line diagram (Qualitative or discrete quantitative)
 Bar diagram
• Simple bar diagram
• Subdivided or component bar diagram
• Multiple bar diagram
 Pie chart

Graphs of frequency distribution (For quantitative variable)

 Histogram
 Frequency polygon
 Cumulative frequency curve or Ogive curve
Frequency Table or Frequency
Distribution:

A list of a dataset which divides the

data in different classes and gives us
the number of observations in each
class is called frequency distribution.
Problem 1:
Daily production of keyboard in a small keyboard
factory of last 22 days is given below.
34 36 31 46 76 88 43 44
32
46 40 55 66 56 50 42
33 80
79 81 46 40
i. Construct the frequency distribution
ii. Calculate relative frequency, percentage of
frequency, cumulative frequency and mid-values.
Question:
How can you construct a frequency distribution?

Answer: Try yourself

In case of group frequency, suggested the following formula for

determining the approximate number of classes
 K = 1+3.322 log n
Problem 2:
The following data for some size of t-shirt.
Here S= small, M= Medium, L= Large, XL= Extra
Large, XXL= Extra Extra Large
M M S S L XL XL XXL M S
S L L XL
XL XXL M XL XL M M S S L L S
S M
i. Construct the frequency distribution
ii. Calculate relative frequency, percentage of
frequency, cumulative frequency for each class.
Problem 3:
The following data for some size of t-shirt.
t-shirt size Frequency
Small 8
Medium 7
Large 5
Extra large 6
Extra extra large 2

i. Draw line diagram

ii. Draw bar diagram
iii. Draw pie chart
Problem 4: Draw line diagram, multiple bar
diagram and component bar diagram
Month Sales of Sales of
male shoes female shoes
January 40 30
March 4 15
April 25 40
June 12 35
September 32 48
Problem 5:
 Which graphical representation is appropriate for the data? Why?
 Draw any representation where both data are being utilized
together. Make a comparative discussion based on the
representation.

profits in thousands taka of some firms. Draw

Sample question for Final examination

The following frequency polygon shows the amount of daily French fry waste (in pound) in

Green Spice
i. What is the length of the class interval considered in this chart?
ii. Approximately how many days were studied?
iii. How many days there were 12 up to 16 pound waste?
iv. Identify the class interval of waste with highest number of days?
