LESSON 2:

JESUS
CHRIST
IS IT POSSIBLE TO LOVE
ANOTHER PERSON
WITHOUT KNOWING
THEM?
• Jesus, our true friend, is
inviting us to a
relationship which can be
friend forever. This
relationship is a total and
unconditional that no one
can measure it.
JESUS CHRIST IN THE BASIC
HUMAN EXPERIENCE
• First, we must recognize that to really know
Jesus Christ is a life-long process. This is the
experience of all those who believe in him.
• Secondly, knowing Jesus is a living,
challenging, growing and deepining experience.
• Concretely, most Filipino Catholics learn of
Jesus when they were taught their prayers as
young children.
• Third, the Jesus we came to know is both the
historical earthly Jesus and the Risen Christ of
faith.
• Fourth, to know Jesus means being committed
to follow Him, as His disciple.
STO. NIÑO
• In April 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan,
in the service of Charles 1 in Spain, arrived in Cebu
during his voyage to find a westward route to the Indies.
He persuaded Rajah Humabon and his wife Humamay,
to pledge their allegiance with Spain. They were later
baptized into the Catholic faith, taking the Christian
names Carlos and Juana, Magellan presented the Sto.
Niño to the newly-baptized Queen Juana as a symbol of
the alliance. To her husband Carlos, Magellan presented
the bust of the “Ecce Homo” or the depiction of Christ
before Pontius Pilate.
SANTO ENTIERRO

• The statue of the dead Christ, known as the

Santo Entierro or in Kapampangan as Apung
Mamacalulu, is borne on a decorated
“Calandra”, brought funeral carriage, after
which it brought around the community and
by the faithful and the “Pahalik sa Señor”.
Such a procession may involve images of the
other saints, but regardless if the number,
tradition dictates that the last image in the
procession is always the Mater Dolorosa.
HESUS NAZARENO

• On May 31, 1606, the first group of the Augustinian Recollect,

missionaries landed on the shores of Manila, bringing with them
from Mexico the life-size image of Our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ genuflected under the weight of the cross. The image was
enshrined at the first Recollect church in Bagumbayan (now
part of the Rizal Park), which was inaugurated on September
10, 1606, and placed under the patronage of the glorious
presecutor and martyr, Saint John the Baptist. In 1608, the
second biggest Recollection church dedicated to Saint Nicholas
of Tolentine was completed inside the Walled City, where the
image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno was transferred.
SACRED HEART

• The Sacred Heart is one of the most famous

religious devotions to Jesus’s physical heart as
the representation of his divine love for
humanity. This devotions is predominantly
used in the catholic church and among some
high church Anglicans.
DIVINE MERCY

• The history of the image of the merciful Jesus begins

on February 22, 1931, with the first of a series of
revelations to Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska in the
convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in
Vilnius. It continues with Reverend Michael
Sopocko, a spiritual director to the obedient nun
upon whose request Mr. Eugeniusz Kazimirowski
began the Painting of an original image under
Sister’s instruction in 1934. The solemnity is
celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter
CHRISTO REI

• The sanctuary of Christ the King ( Portuguese:

Cristo-Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine
dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ
overlooking the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It was
inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and inaugurated on 17
May 1959. Its feast day is on the last Sunday of
ordinary time.
PERSON OF JESUS

1. True Man: Jesus Our Brother – The sacred scriptures and

the constant teaching of the church are one in asserting that
Jesus is trully a man.
2. True God: “ One Lord, Jesus, the Only Son of God” – The
Christian faith stands or falls on the confession of Jesus as the
only Son of God, our Lord. Scripture grounds this confession
in two ways. First, Jesus as God’s Eternal Word coming down
to take on human nature in the incarnation. Second, Jesus was
“Lifted up” at the resurrection.
3. One: Jesus Is One Person – The Sacred Scriptures clearly
affirm “ there is only one mediator between, God and men, the
man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all. (1
Timothy 2:5)
