Computer Hardware Components

The document discusses the components of computer systems. It defines a computer and explains its four main functions: input, processing, output, and storage. It describes computer hardware as the physical parts of a computer system like monitors, hard drives, and keyboards. Computer software is defined as programs that perform tasks like operating systems and productivity applications. The document goes on to identify and describe some key internal computer components including the CPU, motherboard, internal memory like ROM and RAM, storage devices like hard drives and solid state drives, and external devices like USB drives. Interactive games are provided to help learn the parts of a computer system.

Unit 2: Computer Systems

Components of Computer Systems:

Computer Hardware
• Aim and purpose

To enable learners to understand the components of computer &

functions

• Learning outcomes

On completion of this a learner should:

1. Understand the components of computer systems

2. Be able to recommend computer systems for a business purpose
3. Be able to set up and maintain computer systems.

Definition of a Computer
“A computer is an electronic device, operating under
the control of instructions stored in its own memory
unit, that can accept data (input), process data and
produce information (output).”

Input Output
Data Processing Data
Functions of a Computer
Four functions are performed by the computer
(information processing cycle):
1) Input
2) Process
3) Output
4) Storage.
Hardware vs Software
Computer Hardware
Hardware is defined as the physical part or
component of a computer system which
can be felt, seen, and touched.

Examples: Monitor, hard drive, computer cables,

keyboard, mouse, modem, printer, etc.
Computer Software
Software can be defined as a set of instructions or
collection of programs which are designed and
developed to perform specific tasks.

Examples:
- Operating systems (such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, mac)
- Productivity Software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Internet Browsers (Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari)

Computer Hardware
What do you already know?
Can you identify the following internal components?

? ?

?
?
CPU
- It’s the 'brain' of a computer.
- CPU = Central Processing Unit
- It transfers instructions between a computer's
hardware and software
CPU

fan are essential hardware components for cooling the CPU. The
heat generated by its high operating speeds must be dissipated
quickly or the CPU will shut down, or may even be damaged through
overheating.

Motherboard
- Motherboard is the backbone of the computer
- It ties the computer's components together at one spot
- It allows them to talk to each other
Internal Memory
ROM
- Read-Only Memory can only be read and not written to.
- It is called read only memory as we can only read the programs
and data stored on it but cannot write on it.
- It stores information permanently.
- ROM is located on the motherboard.

RAM
- Random Access Memory
- It can be both read and written.
- It’s a temporary so any data stored in RAM is lost when the
computer is powered down.
- RAM can be inserted into slots on the motherboard.

Memory
- stores your data.
- installed internally in our computer and connected to the motherboard.
A) HDD
- HDD: Hard Disk Drive.
- HDDs are more common
in older devices.
B) SSD
- SSD: Solid-state drives
- SSDs are the most common
storage drives today.
USB drive
• Also It can be called a flash drive or Pen drive
• It is a small & portable device
• It plugs into the USB port on your computer.
• USB is used for storage, data backup, and
transferring files between devices.
