Chapter One: Al-Khabar ‫ا""لخبر‬

In it there are 2 discussions:


 1st Discussion - Khabar Mutawatir
 End Discussion - Khabar Aahaad
Introduction
There are 2 types of khabar with respect to how it reaches us:
 If it has a chain of narrations which is not decreased/limited to a specific number
then it is mutawatir.
 If its chain of narrations are limited to a specific number then it is khabar aahaad.

Both of them have further types and explanations which will come in the following 2
discussions.
Discussion 1 - Khabar Mutawatir
Definition of Mutawatir
 Literal meaning: derived from at-tawaatur i.e. succession (tataabi’)

 Istilaahi meaning: that which has been narrated by such a large number of people, it is
impossible that they all agreed upon a lie generally.

Explanation of the definition

 Stages of narrators: i.e. Stage 1 - Sahaba, Stage 2 - Tabi’een, Stage 3 - Taba-tabi’een etc.
Conditions of Mutawatir
4 conditions
1. A large number of narrators narrated it - there is Ikhtilaaf (difference of opinion)
with regards to what the minimum number of narrators is - There are a number of
different opinions about the minimum number of narrators required.
The chosen opinion is that the minimum is 10 individuals.
2. This large number is found in all of the stages of the chain of narrators.
Conditions of Mutawatir
3. It is generally impossible for all of them to agree upon a lie.
4. Their khabar is based upon perception of the narrators
 Like them saying “We heard… or we saw or we felt/touched or …”.
 However if the khabar is based upon their intellect like the saying “the universe is
made”, so the khabar will not be then called mutawatir.
Ruling of Mutawatir
 Mutawatir convey necessary knowledge (‘ilm dharoori)

 There are no objections in its acceptance and likewise is the khabar mutawatir.

 Khabar Mutawaatir: They convey certain (dharoor) knowledge and one is obliged
to accept it as if he saw or heard it himself.
Types of Mutawatir: Lafzhi and Ma’nawi
 Mutawatir Lafzhi - that which is mutawatir in word and meaning.
Like the hadith: “Whoever intentionally lies against me, let him take his seat in the
Fire”

 Mutawatir Ma’nawi - that which is mutawatir in meaning but not in word.


Like: the ahadith of raising the hands in supplication, around 100 ahadith have been
reported from Nabi saws in this regard.
Prevalence of Mutawatir (Wujood)
There are a considerable number of mutawatir ahadith, from them:
 Hadith of the Hawd (Kawthar),
 Hadith of Masah Alal Khuffain
 Hadith of Allah swt brightening the face of the one (who hears and conveys ahadith)

However if we look at the number of Khabar Aahaad narrations, then we find that the
Mutawatir Ahadith are very little in number in consideration to them (Khabar Aahaad).

 Al-Azhaar Al-Mutanaathirah fil Akhbaaril Mutawaatirah - As-Suyuti.
 Qutuful Azhaar - As-Suyuti.
 Nazmul Mutanaathir minal Hadeethil Mutawaatir - Muhammad Ibn Ja’far Al-
Kattaani.
