Kinds of Quantitative Design

This document discusses different types of quantitative research designs: - True experimental designs involve control and experimental groups where subjects are randomly assigned and the researcher controls variables. - Pre-test post-test control group designs involve pre and post intervention measurements for treatment and control groups to measure the intervention's effect. - Quasi-experimental designs do not use random assignment so groups may not be equivalent. Time series and non-equivalent group designs are discussed. - Pre-experimental designs like one group pre-test, one group post-test, and one shot case studies observe a single group before and/or after treatment with no control group for comparison.

Quantitative Research Design
● The goal of quantitative research design is to ascertain the proportion of
persons who hold a given belief, behavior, or emotion. Large sample sizes
are common in quantitative projects, which focus on the volume of
replies rather than the more nuanced or emotional understanding that
qualitative research seeks to elicit.
True
Experimental
Design
True Experimental
➢ These criteria are present:

● the researcher has control over the variables, treatment/

intervention and the subjects
● there is experimental and control group
● subjects are assigned to groups
Pre-test-Post-test Control Group
Design
● The pretest-posttest control group design, also called the pretest-posttest randomized experimental
design, is a type of experiment where participants get randomly assigned to either receive an
intervention (the treatment group) or not (the control group). The outcome of interest is measured 2
times, once before the treatment group gets the intervention — the pretest — and once after it — the
posttest.

1. Pre- intervention measurement for 1. Post- intervention measurement

each group. for each group.

Before Intervention After Time

Control Group
Post-test Design
❖ A posttest is an assessment measure given to participants after they have received
treatment as part of a research study. A pretest-posttest research design must provide
participants with the same assessment measures before and after treatment in order to
determine if any changes can be connected to the treatment.
Posttest Only Control Group Design
The posttest-only control group design is a basic experimental design where participants get
randomly assigned to either receive an intervention or not, and then the outcome of interest is
measured only once after the intervention takes place in order to determine its effect
Advantages of the posttest-only control group design

1. The treatment and control groups are equivalent at baseline.

This is very important because when the 2 groups are equal, any difference in the
outcome measured will be attributed only to the intervention and not to the initial
difference between the groups.

Note that these groups are not expected to be perfectly equal, in fact they don’t need
to be. As long as we are assigning participants at random, we won’t be subject to
selection bias and we will obtain comparable groups.
Quasi
Experimental
Design
Non Equivalent Design
INDEPENDENT VARIABLES (CAUSE)
DEPENDENT VARIABLES (EFFECT)

Non Equivalent Design

When participants are not randomly assigned to conditions, however, the resulting groups are
likely to be dissimilar in some ways. For this reason, researchers consider them to be
nonequivalent
Time Series Design

A basic time-series design is a quasi-experimental

research design in which a dependent variable is
measured at many different points in time in one group
before and after a treatment that is manipulated by the
researcher is administered.
Pre Experimental
Design
One Shot Case
a research model wherein a sole group is viewed only
one time after some occurrence was assumed to have
been the facilitator of alterations.
One-Group Pre-Test

You might notice that the pretest-posttest design is much like a

within-subjects experiment in which each participant is tested
first under the control condition and then under the treatment
condition.
One-Group Post-Test
A single case is observed at two time points, one before the treatment
and one after the treatment. Changes in the outcome of interest are
presumed to be the result of the intervention or treatment. No control
or comparison group is employed.
