Lesson 2 - Evaluation of Functions

The document discusses evaluating functions. It provides the definition of a function as relating an input (x) to an output (f(x)). It explains that f(x) represents the value of the function when x is plugged in. Examples are given of evaluating different functions for given x-values. The domain is defined as the set of x-values, while the range is the set of f(x) outputs. Function notation is more concise than writing it as y= when evaluating for a specific value of x.

Evaluation of

function
GENERAL MathEMATICS
LEARNING TARGET:
● I can evaluate a
function
Law of substitution

If a + x = b and x=
then
a +c= b
Example
To find the value of 2n-11 when n=12
2(12)-11
13
The function notation y = f(x) tells you that y
is a function of x. If there is a rule relating to
x, such as y = 3x + 1, then you can also
write.
The domain of a function
f is the set of values of x
for which f is defined.
The range of a function f
is the set of all values of
f(x), where x is an element
of the domain of f. Progress:
This input is represented by
x and the output by f(x). The
special notation f(x),
represents the valueof the
function at the number x.
X- values Function- values ,
f(x) = 3x + 1

X=2 f(2) = 3(2) + 1 = 7

X=3 f(3) = 3(3) + 1 = 10

X=4 f(4) = 3(4) + 1 = 13

X=5 f(5) = 3(5) + 1 =16

a. f(x) means “the value of f at x”. It does not mean “f times
x”
b. Letters other than f such as G and H or g and h can also
be used
c. f is the name of function and f(x) is the value of the
function at x.
The function notation f(x)=3x+1 has a certain advantage
over the notation y=3x+1 as far as evaluation is concerned.
That is, if we use y=3x+1 , then we would have to write,
when x=2, then y=3(2)+1=7.

However, if we use f(x)=3x+1, we would only write ,

f(2)=3(2)+1=7
Example
If f(x)=x+8, evaluate each.
a. f(4) b. f(-2) c. f(-x) d. f(x+3)

f(4)=4+8 = 12
f(-2)=-2+8= 6
f(-x)=-x+8
f(x+3)=x+3+8
f(x+3)=x+11
Example
The price function p(x)=640-0.2(x) represents the price
for which you can sell x printed T-shirts. What must be
the price of the T-shirt for the first 3 entries in the table?

Target No. of 500 900 1,300 1,700 2,100 2,500

Shirts Sales
Price per T- ? ? ? ? ? ?
shirt
Example
p(x)=640-0.2(500) p(x)=640-0.2(900) p(x)=640-0.2(1,300)
= 640-100 = 640-180 = 640-260
=540 =460 =380

The price of the shirt for the first 3 entries are ₱540, ₱460
and ₱380.

a lot!
