Types of Poetry

Haiku
Adapted from the Japanese.
 3 line stanzas with 5/7/5 syllable count
Has no rhyme
Focuses on the beauty and simplicity found in nature.
In modern adaptations, the syllabic count is ignored but the spirit
of economy is kept.

Modern Haikus
 With 3 lines without counting syllables
 With a fragment or a phrase
 With an element of nature
 With verbs in the present tense
 With no rhyme

Bio Poem
 Is used to reveal information to the reader about the poet.

Cinquaian
 A five line poem inspired by Japanese Haiku
 It can be composed through words, syllable counts or part
of speech.
Emotion Poem
 Is used to describe various emotions using descriptive
language.

Diamante
 Is a 7 line poem that looks like a diamond.
 It does not have to rhyme.
 It can be used to describe 1 topic or 2 opposite topics.
Limerick
 a humorous poem with five lines
 has distinctive rhythm
 the rhyming scheme is AABBA
example:
Relentless, insatiable deadlines
This manuscript’s still full of red lines
First I’ll sweat through the edits
And check all the credits
Then chill with my favourite red wine
Acrostic
 Also known as name poems
 Spell out names or words with the first letter in each line
 The writer describes someone or something important

Sonnet
 A 14 line poem written in iambic pentameter.
Tanaga
 A Filipino mono-rhyming (identical rhyme)quatrain ( four
lines) of seven syllables line
 It is untitled

Diona
 A Filipino tercet ( three lines) of seven syllable lines
 It is untitled.
