INTRODUCTION Image compression is minimizing the size in bytes of a image without degrading the quality of the image

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING

Image processing is a physical process used to convert an image signal into a physical image. The image signal can be either digital or analog. The actual output itself can be an actual physical image or the characteristics of an image

IMAGE COMPRESSION
The process of obtaining a representation of the image with less number of bits than the original.

DECOMPRESSION
The process of recovering the image from its compressed form to its (almost) original form.

LOSSLESS COMPRESSION
Compression without any loss of information-There is no difference between the Original Image and Reconstructed one.

LOSSY COMPRESSION
Compression with partial loss of information Reconstructed Image differs from the Original one (within and accepted limit).

Review:
Two important properties of a fractal F
F has detail at every level. F is exactly, approximately or statistically self-similar.

Why Fractal Image Compression

Different type of compression scheme worth exploring Takes advantage of similarities within an image Advanced detail interpolation High theoretical compression rates Fast decompression times

Division of Electronics

Compression is a way to reduce the number of bits in a frame but retaining its meaning. Decreases space, time to transmit, and cost Technique is to identify redundancy and to eliminate it

Fractal Image Introduction

A complex image can be formed from multiple iterations of contractive duplication. Each iteration is contractive. Detail at every scale.

Fractal Image Compression

Lossy image compression method. Based on the fact that parts of an image often resemble other parts of the same image

Fractal Image Compression

These similarities are data redundancy. Compression can be achieved by not storing the redundant data. One section of the image can be duplicated and modified multiple times to represent other sections of the image. These modifications are a series of changes known as an affine transformation.

coefficients.

* The affine transformation is also contractive.

* Since the affine transformation is stored as a series of

relatively small numbers, much less memory is required to store the many similar sections of the image.
