Solvent Separation UNIT-06 - GOOD

This document summarizes the solvent separation unit (Unit-06). Key points: - Unit-06 uses solvent extraction to separate phenol from water-phenol mixtures, using di-iso-propyl ether (DIPE) as the solvent. - Major equipment includes extractors, an extract settler, extract receiver, solvent distillation column, and associated pumps, tanks, and heat exchangers. - Solvent flows through the extractors to separate phenol from raffinate, then is recovered via distillation and recycled to the extractors. - Operating parameters like temperature, pressure and flow rates are specified for the various units. - Safety aspects of DIPE storage

• Solvent extraction process is preferred over steam distillation process for
extraction of phenol because the water-phenol mixture forms azeotrope of 9.2
weight percent phenol.
• Solvent; DIPE, Di-Iso-Propyl-Ether.
As DIPE having preferential solubility to phenol and
immiscible with aqueous components, DIPE is
selected as solvent

• Operating temperature; 43 0C

• Make up is added in 1st extractor @ 1.19 kg/hr, 35 0C, 1.12 kg/cm2 a and
recovered solvent is added in 5th extractor.

DIPE
 A secondary ether used as a solvent
 A Colourless liquid that is slightly soluble in water but miscible with most organic
solvents.
 Tends to form explosive peroxides upon standing in air for long period.
 Due to the secondary carbon next to the oxygen atom, which makes storage of DIPE
more dangerous.
 The stored solvent should therefore be tested for the presence of peroxides more
often. (Once in every three months)
 Molecular formulae; C6H14O
 Density; 0.725 g/mol
 BoilingPoint; 69 0C

 Master flow controller of the whole phenosolvan and ammonia recovery unit.
 Operated in auto mode only, once the plant is balanced and at >=80% normal
capacity in order to use FIC-1045 (Solvent return to extraction flow rate) on
manual/local set points for precisely establishing final desired solvent rate by
increasing the return by small increments.
 Both FIC-1046 & 1045 are interlinked for not operating in auto mode.
 Flow is cascaded to LIC-1010, i.e level controller in extract receiver.
 Closed on reflux failure to 06VL-104 solvent distillation column, High level

• Level is monitored in sump, chimney tray. High level closes the 06FV-1046,
flow to distillation column.
• Reboilers are put on bypass(Stop heating) at high levels in sump, chimney tray,
flare KO drum as well as at high prssure and reflux failure.
• Temperature is monitored in the reboiler compartment and chimney tray.
Temperature is controlled by 06TV-1012~1015.
• Pressure is not controlled and overpressure protection is provided by high
pressure switch, which stop heating and feed to column. Also PSV -105 is
provided at set point of 3 kg/cm2 g.
