FREEHAND DRAWING

Freehand drawing refers to the ability to draw

something without using any tools or mechanical
instruments like grids, rulers, or compasses to help
them do it. Instead, artists draw using only their
hands and rely on their observational skills to
measure and draw what they see.

LINES

In geometry, a line is a straight one-dimensional figure

that does not have a thickness, and it extends
endlessly in both directions
 Horizontal lines  Diagonal lines
 Vertical lines  Zigzag lines
 Curved lines  Perpendicular lines
 Regular curved lines  Parallel lines
 Irregular curved lines

DRAWING PENCILS

A pencil (also called: graphite pencil) is a

writing utensil with a graphite lead embedded
in a wooden shaft. It is mainly used for artistic
sketching and drawing, for stenography or
notes.

ACCENTED OUTLINE DRAWING

 Outline drawing is generally a perspective

representation of an object in outline form.

 Accented drawing have a varied line thicknesses.

SHADED DRAWING

Shading is the process of making the visible

surfaces of an object, drawn in outline form appear
a variety of tones or values.

Shadow is an image cast by an object on another

surface.
DRAFTING TOOLS,
EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS
Drawing Table and Stool

A table that has a surface that

can be raised up or down or
turned to different angles and
that is used for drawing.

T square

a T-shaped ruler, used primarily in mechanical

drawing, having a short crosspiece that slides
along the edge of the drawing board as a
guide to the perpendicular longer section in
making parallel lines, right angles
Triangles

A triangle is a drafting tool used to draw

accurate parallel lines, vertical lines, and
other angled lines. Generally, two right-
angled triangular pieces of differing angles
form one set

Rule

A ruler is a stationery item and drafting tool

used when drawing lines, as a guide for
cutting, and for various other uses.
Set of Drawing Instruments

A small drawing set containing at least a

ruling pen, compass, and divider.

Compass

A drawing instrument used for drawing circles

and arcs. One of the two legs of the compass
ends in a needle, which the user places gently on
paper to keep the compass in place. The other
leg has a writing instrument on its end.
Divider

Tools for comparing sizes, dividing line

segments, and measuring distances on
drawings used by draftsman, artist, and
other craftsman.

Protractor

A semicircular geometry tool divided into 180

equal parts, each measuring 1°. It is used for
drawing angles of known measures and finding
angles of unknown measures and is usually made
of transparent plastic, glass, steel, or wood.
French Curve

French curves are plastic (or wooden) templates

having an edge composed of several different curves.
French curves are used in drafting (or were before
computer-aided design) to draw smooth curves of
almost any desired curvature in mechanical drawings.

Erasing Shield

An eraser shield is a thin sheet of stainless steel or

plastic with slots and holes of different shapes. They
are designed to allow erasers to be used through them
to erase lines and text without removing lines close by
which do not need to be (or should not be) erased.
Pencil Sharpener

A small device with a blade inside,

used for making pencils sharp.

Pencil

slender rod of a solid marking substance,

such as graphite, enclosed in a cylinder
of wood, metal, or plastic; used as
an implement for writing, drawing, or
marking.
Drawing Pen

Is a specialized instrument used by an engineer,

architect, or drafter to make lines of constant
width for architectural, engineering, or technical
drawings. Technical pens use either a refillable
ink reservoir or a replaceable ink cartridge.

Lettering Device

Are an indispensable tool for technical

drawing. They contain cut-outs of letters,
numbers and special characters, facilitating
work in construction and engineering
Drawing Paper

A paper specially prepared for the use of

drawers (such as draftsmen or sketchers)

Tracing Paper

Tracing paper is a translucent paper that can be used for

drawing and drafting. You literally can see through the
paper. It’s often called vellum because it shares some
characteristics with animal skin parchment. Tracing
paper is made of thin, lightweight material and has a
smooth surface.
Pencil Sharpener

A small device with a blade inside,

used for making pencils sharp.

Pencil

Slender rod of a solid marking substance,

such as graphite, enclosed in a cylinder
of wood, metal, or plastic; used as
an implement for writing, drawing, or
marking.
Rubber Eraser

Erasers are a useful stationary tool used to

remove pencil marks from paper. They usually
have a rubbery texture, sometimes with a grainy
outer layer, and come in a range of sizes, shapes,
and colours.
Draftsman's Tape

Drafting tape is coated with a weak adhesive

and is mainly used to fix paper to drafting
boards and to hold lettering, etc. while
designing and doing layouts.
