Course Description
 This course introduces students with basic elements
and features of roads. It covers traffic facilities,
pavement construction, pavement materials
characterization, pavement structural design and
geometric design of highways.
Course Objectives
On completion of course, students should have: -
Basic understanding of all aspects of designing of roads.
A clear concept of traffic engineering elements.
A working knowledge of pavement material
characterization and structural pavement design
procedures
A fair knowledge of geometric standards and design
features of highways.
Course Guidelines
Lecture periods will be used to present concepts and
examples. All must be in possession of referred books/
relevant chapters of the books.
 Slides and class notes alone, in no case will serve as an
alternate to books.
Handouts will be for specific lectures only wherein the
scope is beyond the referred chapters. A thorough study is
essential for understanding of the subject
A course pack will be made available consisting of
handouts, assignments, example sheets etc.
Students should remain attentive during lectures, clear the
doubts, study relevant chapters and prepare notes.
Continued
Students should participate in class discussions as this
will reduce the time spent on understanding
subsequently and will also be helpful in quizzes/
practical and assignments.
Students are themselves responsible for making up the
deficiency for the missed periods for any reason.
Never be late in the class, create disturbance and leave
the class without permission.

Continued
Class tests will be held as per schedule. Quizzes will
be taken without prior information. No makeup class
assignment/ quiz will be given.
Practicals should be performed with thorough
understanding.
For all practical periods students will assemble in class
room and after briefing and attendance will proceed to
laboratory as directed.
Practical periods will also be used for lectures, class
assignments, quizez and self-study etc.
